Does anyone have any tips or tricks for getting baby to swallow medicine from a syringe that can't be mixed into formula/breast milk? To add to the problem, my LO has been drooling a lot, which seems to make the medicine come out of her mouth more easily. She doesn't like the taste so she whines and cries a little.
Re: Giving baby meds
I lie mine flat on her back and then put the syringe at the very back of tongue off the side a bit. Then I shoot all 0.8ml in at once. this causes her to swallow. Since it is far enough back she can't push it forward with tongue.
I used to give 2ml at a time and let her swallow but it was little enough she would manage to push it forward...if I quickly squirt it all she instinctively swallows. She does give a wide-eyed gag with the swallow but always quickly recovers and is all smiles...it's much mellower a gag then the ones the reflux itself causes!
I put it in the back of his mouth in his cheek "pocket" and it causes him to swallow, I don't do a lot at once cause he will choke.
Also like the previous poster said, in a nipple, it works well.
Interesting that you say this because while I was giving her the meds this morning, she was crying and seemed to be getting hot, so I blew gently on the side of her face with the intention of cooling her off, and she swallowed. So I kept doing this with each little bit I gave her, and it worked quite well.
This. When DD was in the hospital, she drooled the contents of the nipple out, so one of the nurses blew a little puff n her face and she swallowed everything. It worked consistently for a month while giving her 3 types of vitamins a day.
This or they sell little tiny bottles just for medicine
This. My LO has been on meds since we left the hospital, he is 5 weeks now. And have just done a little at a time and put it on the back of his cheek.
