Monitor Suggestions? Angel Care

So, we went to a baby basics class last night and the nurse/teacher was saying she felt like the Angel Care Monitor (which we just bought) wasn't worth the money.  She said it gave off a lot of false alarms and would suggest against it.  Does anyone have one and can offer some feedback?  Or... if you have any feedback on a monitor you suggest (some features I like are video, night vision views).  It would also be great to know if anyone has one that they use remotely (via iphone or something similar) where they can watch the baby at a sitter, etc.  We are very interested in that option also.  Thx!

Re: Monitor Suggestions? Angel Care

  • We used THIS monitor with DD and I loved it!  We used it for a long time (a year maybe?) and we only had 1 false alarm.  We will defintely be using it again with this LO.

This does not come with a monitor so we used a seperate video monitor.

  • We got the Angel Care monitor, but haven't used it yet obviously. For me, I think it will help reassure me a bit. Will it cure all my fears? No. Most of the reviews where people said they had "false alarms" were people not using it right (i.e. picking up the child before turning the monitor off).

  • We have an Angel Care monitor. I do like it a lot, but it can give of false alarms. It happened to us the other night. DD was too far to one side of the crib. She can roll around a lot now. You sometimes need to adjust the sensitivity to get it right. Also, you don't want a fan directly pointing towards the crib. This makes the monitor think there's movement and you don't want it to confuse that with actual movement.

I really do like it though and it does help me sleep better. I also love that there is a temperature reading, so we know when to adjust DD's AC.

  • We've used the angel care since my 7 yr old daughter was a baby and I still use it for my 2 1/2 yr old son.  It works great, I've only had one false alarm.  The people who say they aren't worth it because you get false alarms are idiots and also didn't read the directions that clearly state if you're getting false alarms you need to adjust the sensitivity.

Personally I'd rather get up a for a million false alarms than miss the one time I could have saved my baby.  It's great peace of mind for SIDS, when they have a fever, when they get out of bed on their own and a whole bunch of other scary things.

One thing you will need to do is get used to turning it off when you take the baby out.  It takes about a week of walking out of the room and hearing the alarm but you finally remember to turn it off each time.

  • My DH & I purchased the Angel Care Monitor because we heard so much good about it from friends. We set it up the other day & tested it in our cradle. We let it rock for the movement & within seconds of it going still, the alarm went off. Like PP said, you have to adjust the sensitivity. Once you get it right, it's suppose to be incredibly accurate.

I say keep it & give it a try. I wouldn't return mine for anything!

  • I was set on the Angelcare until I saw the Snuza Halo/Hero. You can use it anytime/anywhere, so even while the baby is in a Rock and Play or whatever. And you can take it with you.

I don't have an actual video monitor though yet. Still debating :/

  • We have one and LOVE it.  I was completely skeptical and thought it was a waste of money for all the reasons you mentioned.  Then after about a week of DD being home from the hospital and realizing how scary it is that they could stop breathing at any minute (even when in the room with you - DD slept in a co-sleeper next to our bed for 8 months and we definitely could NOT tell if she was breathing at night without turning on a light and/or poking her to move since we had her swaddled), we broke down and got an Angel Care monitor. Some of the best money we spent.

If you don't adjust the settings right, you probably do get a lot of false positives.  But you can adjust the sensitivity, it isn't hard, and I would say in the 2.5 years we used ours (yes, we kept it in her crib for 2.5 years) it went off maybe a dozen times.  I have no idea if they were false alarms, as by the time we got to her she was breathing, but I would much rather be safe than sorry.  It gave us huge peace of mind.

In addition to the Angel Care monitor, we have a Summer Infant Video Monitor.  We didn't start using that until we moved her into her own room at 8 months, but that is another one I can't do without, especially now that she is older and more mobile. It serves a very different purpose, but is equally indispensable IMO.  I have heard that there is now an Angel Care that also has video - that would be ideal, two birds with one stone and all that.

  • A friend let us borrow the Angel Care monitor but we plan on using the Snuza Hero. Based on the reviews I have read, it has far less false alarms and it very portable.

  • We have one and used it with DS.  Loved it.  Never had a single false alarm.  We will be using it for this LO as well.
  • We have the AngelCare and loved it. To me it gave me peace of mind and that is a wonderful thing postpartum. We didn't use it right away but after the first couple months we did. The only time we had a false alarm was when DS was 6 months old or around that, and he had rolled waaaaay off the sensor pad (which is very sensitive by the way). I'd rather it work than not. Anyway, I don't know where the nurse/teacher got her info but it does get pretty decent reviews.
