Where to have the baby??

Ok so a little about me... I live in nyc with my husband who is Italian.. His dream has always been to have a baby in Italy..i obviously want to have it in the states AND I really want to stick with my dr. ALSO why would I fly halfway across the world just to give birth with strangers in a Place where I don't speak the language! Grrrr.

Re: Where to have the baby??

  • I'm with you, that seems crazy to me. I wouldn't feel comfortable with going to an unknown hospital and having some random doctor deliver your baby JUST so that you can say that your baby was born in Italy.

Plus I don't think you'd want to/be able to fly after a certain point, so you'd have to live in Italy for a few weeks to a month before delivery.

  • Why? Lol I don't get that. I would be having the baby at home? What are you going to do? Take the painfully long flight home 2 weeks after birth when you can't sit properly yet and you're still bleeding, and baby is brand new and expose it to all the germs on an airplane and sht?? That makes me mad lol there is no chance in Hll I would agree to that
  • I couldn't even imagine leaving home to have a baby in Italy when you could be in NYC instead. Maybe try to explain to your husband that it would be a much more rewarding experience for everyone if you later took the baby to Italy and he/she actually got to see everything! LO won't remember being born there, but he/she could have a great time visiting!

This. It's important to have a doctor/midwife that you know and trust. You'd have to pick an OB in Italy a few weeks before birth without any experience with that OB...eek. I also think an international flight past like 30 weeks sounds TERRIBLE. I mean, you have to pee all the time, your back and joints are sore, and sitting on a plane for 8+ hours... No way.

    Also what peep said. ;)

  • PPs gave good advice that I agree with, so I just need to say that this is one of the strangest posts I've read on this BMB yet. I can't wrap my head around it at all. I could understand if you were living in Italy. But why on Earth would you travel to have a baby? Forget about the fact that you would have to fly several weeks early for it to even be safe. Where would you live with a brand new infant? In a hotel? With no support? I just don't get why this would even be an option.

    This!

Most airlines will not let you fly internationally after 34 weeks without a doctor's note..so you would have to be there weeks before your due date and stay at least a couple weeks after your LO is born.

In addition to the language barrier, far away from family, your jobs back in the States (I would not want to start my maternity leave 2 months early!), and who would you be staying with in Italy? I would definitely not want to be recovering and bonding with a new baby in a house full of extended family members...

I am sorry I would say h*ll no to your DH's idea...

  • This idea makes no sense to me at all. The language barrier, insurance issues, flights, care before/after baby, unfamiliarity with Italy's healthcare, the list goes on. I cannot think of one good reason why this would be a good idea.

  • Not to mention that this would be WAY out of network for health insurance. The cost alone would make this option completely out of the question, IMO.

  • That sounds completely and utterly impractical for all the reasons PP have mentioned. Unless, of course, you are independantly wealthy and are cool with spending several months in Europe.

Your DH needs a reality check.

  • I'd love to have a baby in Italy, too.

That said, it's a logistical nightmare. Unless your DH has some pretty sweet connections in Italy, I'd write it off as an impossibility. And even if he did have a support network there, if the Mother's uncomfortable, ain't nobody comfortable. Even your husband would be disappointed with the birth if you were in Italy, but you were stressed out and homesick!

  • Thanks ladies. I already made my decision. His family all lives there. Sisters brothers etc so we would be with them but still! Luckily my MIL is on my side and told him to never mention it again! I will be having the baby where I want.

My X is from Croatia. We flew back there with DS when he was six months old and had him christened in his home town. Throw that at him as a happy medium instead.

I think this is a great compromise!
