Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Hoping this is just a stage

My 14 month old son is usually a happy, easy going kid and hardly ever fusses. For the last few weeks he's been so clinging and so whiny and crying every single time something doesn't go his way. He has started crying everytime I drop him off at daycare in the mornings. He is always wanting to be held and sometimes even throws fits on the floor. He's never been like this. Looking for any other moms that's had similar situations?

  • DD is acting almost the same way right now. She used to be able to play by herself and hardly ever whined. Now she whines the second I put her down and try to do anything without holding her.

She was sick last week so I chalked it up to that. But then it continued and I just confirmed today that she is getting 2 new teeth. I'm really hoping its teething and she'll cease the clingyness soon.

The good news is that he is normal.
  • If it was only going on a few days or intermittently, I would be apt to chalk it up to a number of different things like teething or being tired, but if it is consistently going on for several weeks and it seems very out of character for him, there may be more going on.  Have there been any changes at the day care that would cause him to have anxiety when you drop him off?  I would ask the teachers if there are any kids there that he may be learning this "having a fit" thing from.  We just got DS out of a private sitter situation and part of the reason I am grateful we did is that one of the kids has major fits and will screech and scream for no reason.  DS starting picking that up and would do it at home the day after he was there.  DS has never had issues when I drop him off at daycare and if he all of a sudden starting crying all the time, knowing his laid back personality, I would be looking for reasons other than separation anxiety. Hopefully it is just a phase in your DS's case...one I hope he passes through quickly for your sake!

Wonder Week. DD was particularly clingy during this past one.

  • We had a lot of this at 14 months too. I chalked it up to the fact that we had just got back from Disney where he was with both of us 24/7 and going back to the sitter wasn't ok with him. It seems like he's doing a lot better with it now (15 months), so I'm assuming it was a phase.
