Help my DS sleep in!

My LO has always been a good sleeper, but he has been waking up at the crack of dawn. He typically sleeps 7-7, but now is waking up between 5 and 5:30. I am NOT a morning person and he is not getting enough sleep (terrible napper). Suggestions?

  • DS is getting up around 5 too, what I have been doing is putting him in bed with me and he usually falls asleep for another hour or so.  I am also not a morning person. Lately too I have been giving him Cheerios and more water or milk and that has seemed to extend his sleeping in.

  • My DS is doing the same thing. He usually sleeps 7-7 too and lately has been getting up at 5. He had some trouble with his naps, wasn't sleeping as long as usual. I ended up putting him down 30 minutes before normal naptime, sometimes even an hour if he seems really tired. That has helped him nap longer.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies! Nice knowing my LO isn't the only one :)

  • I agree that it sounds like just a phase. Perhaps you could try to put him to bed a little later? But what I've learned about toddlers is that they set their own agenda when it comes to waking up. You'll get your chance to sleep in when they are teenagers :)
  • My 18-month-old switched from sleeping 12 to 11 hours at night almost the same time he turned 18 months. I'm hoping he'll gradually get back to sleeping a little later, but my hopes aren't high. Keep in mind that as they get older, the amount of sleep they need changes. Obviously, that doesn't make 5:30 a.m. any more appealing, but unfortunately many of the moms I know with older toddlers wake up by 6 or 6:30 every morning :-/ Good luck!
