Why Finnish babies sleep in boxes.

This is an interesting article.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22751415

I think it is great that as long as they see the Dr. by the 4th month of pregnancy that they receive a box with a lot of needed items. As far as using a box for a crib, I cannot say I would use one, but I can see how it would actually work well for little infants and I am sure they make it rather sturdy. I don't see it being much different than my cradle (solid sides).

I read that article the other day. I wish our government did that for us. I'd love a box with all the essentials right after birth. It would take away a lot of stress for those first few days.

  • That's amazing. Such a great idea.
  • I know there was a thread about this yesterday, but I have to comment. I was talking to MH about this and he started off on his usual rant about how America is screwed up because of the IRS. At first I was going to just smile and nod like I usually do (hey, we do what we gotta do, amirite ladies?), but it actually started making sense. If we all paid a higher federal sales tax instead of income tax, there would be a lot more people contributing to the federal budget and it would be harder to evade taxes. Every consumer in our great consumer nation would be paying into a fund that could provide programs like this.

Granted, I freely admit that I know nothing about the economy and can barely even balance a checkbook, so I am probably talking out of my butt. Does anyone who knows more about econ want to weigh in?

  • It's funny that you mention sales tax. That is why they are pushing sales tax on internet purchases because it has taken over the market for consumer purchasing. Instead, a lot of local areas are trying to increase what other taxes they have to make up for the loss of sales.

  • Sorry, I did not know this was posted the other day. I am in and out and this board is quite busy. It is hard to catch up on all the posts.

Well, I'm no econ major.  I'm pretty sure I commented on this when you mentioned it awhile back, but for one thing it would start a booming black market where people buy things for cash off the back of a truck to avoid sales tax. For another, the really wealthy will buy their big-ticket items out of the country to avoid sales tax, and I doubt they could ever buy enough 'things' to proportionally pay their share of taxes for what they earn anyway. Fraud will exist no matter what you do. A better step, IMHO,  would just be to close off giant, unfair tax loopholes and offshore tax havens for multimillionaires. I think if you live and work and hell, even run for president in this country, then your money should be in US banks and institutions, not parked in the Caymans earning interest.

Have you seen this video? It's really interesting. If everyone paid their fair share of taxes, I think we'd be in a much better position as a country:

  • Finland is an awesome (but freezing!) country! I have a good friend from there, who moved back years ago, and she sent me a traditional rattle from one of her kids boxes. She said they did not use use the box for a cradle but it was common to. She said most families opt for the box instead of the check at least once just for the sake of the tradition.
