As some of you may remember the results from the pap done at my six-week check-up (actually done at 12 weeks pp) were awful, like stage 0 cervical cancer awful. I had a colposcopy and then a Leep procedure to remove the abnormal cells. Fortunately, the cells had not yet become invasive cancer. Unfortunately, there were no clear margins with one of the spots so it is possible some bad cells were left behind.
Well, I had my re-pap done last week. My doc said if the results were normal I would just get a letter in the mail so imagine the horror and panic when his number showed up on my caller id. I felt a little better when I heard the nurse's voice since if it was REALLY bad news the doc would have called me himself. She said that I tested negative for HPV, which is great news, but my results were still abnormal, although a great deal less abnormal than before. This time they only show an ascus abnormality which stands for atypical cells of unknown significance, as opposed to the high-grade abnormalities on my last test. And, she said the doctor was rating the level of atypicalness (is that even a word?) at 0.5 on a scale of 1-10, so super, super mild. Hopefully this is just from my cervix still healing from the Leep procedure.
My plan, had the results all been completely normal, was to hurry up and do a FET with our one frozen embryo. Given that they aren't 100% normal I plan on putting off the FET. I'll have another pap in four months and then, God willing, that will be normal and we'll move foward with the FET. I'm actually a little relieved that I have some more time because honestly I don't feel ready for another pregnancy right now and I know I'm not ready for 3 under 3 and 5 under 7! Of course, at the same time, I'm worried about what our options will be if the next pap isn't better but worse. My doc has already told me that if I have another pap showing high-grade abnormalities that his recommendation is a hysterectomy.
I guess for right now I'll just continue to focus on trying to stay healthy.
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
Re: Another abnormal pap but there's some good news
I know it's not the same as a normal pap, but great news that it has improved so much! Fingers crossed that your next pap is perfect
