Target Debit card = Free shipping. Thoughts ?

Has anyone tried the Target debit card? I am not one to sign up for store credit cards, but the fact that it's a debit card linked to your checking account is tempting. You get 5% off for all purchases plus free shipping online. It seems like a good deal to me. Just wondering if anyone else has tried it or if there is a catch? Thought it would be good for diapers and things when I'm on maternity leave and don't want to run all over town.

  • I have one and I absolutely love it! 5 percent off every purchase, free shipping and extra 30 days for returns. There is no catch. Comes right out of your bank account.

  • Lurker here, I was talking to my husband about getting one last night. I absolutely hate paying for shipping, plus the 5% off is nice too-the $$ really does add up if you shop often there.

Plus the extra time for returns might come in handy when the LO comes.

  • There's no downside in my mind when there is a debut and option. It clears to your checking account within a day or two, no interest or payments to worry about. And it is surprising how the 5 adds up so quickly! Plus, using the card has benefits to local schools, too.
  • I would be very cautious ... Debit cards issued by banks do not have the same fraud protections as the actual credit cards issued by banks. If it gets stolen, they have direct access to your checking account. For Target to be the issuer, then you are stuck trying to get reimbursement and the issue resolved with both your bank AND Target. Am imagining there'd be quite a bit of run around. Would find out more first on how they handle that before signing up.

  • I agree with previous posters, the 5% discount is great.  I like that the discount is automatic and there's no coupons I have to remember to bring with me.  I like how on the receipt it shows you how much money you've saved to date (though my husband does the reverse math and says, you've spent how much at Target??!!).

     Yep! Exactly this!

  • Yup I couldn't agree more! I absolutely love mine and the fact that it comes straight out of my account, so it's no extra debt to us. Plus, if you need cash back, you still have that option too. I've actually started doing some of our grocery shopping at Target too. I find that on some of their groceries it's cheaper than a regular grocery store, better selection that Walmart, plus you still get the 5% discount! My sister and parents also swear by getting all of their prescriptions at Target too, just for the gift cards you get.

  • I have the debit card and love it! You just have to be careful, as a PP, mentioned with losing it because it doesn't have a protection plan.  Honestly though, I had a friend who had the Target credit card and it was stolen and their fraud services department was really poor.  But, I love the debit card...save 5% and always get free shipping!

This exactly. The only weird thing I've noticed is that sometimes the purchases don't all come out of your account at once. Like say you spend $100, it might post to your account $40, $40 on one day and $20 the next day. It's no big deal, just odd. I mentioned it to customer service once and they said it doesn't happen to everyone but it's a pretty common thing.

  • I finally got the credit card after registering at Target.  With baby, I shop there a lot more than I used to, and 5% adds up!  Free shipping is nice too!
  • I feel like it's a no brainer--I have the debit and it's great.

They would have to have your PIN number though.  The Target debit card is not a VISA/MC/AMX so there is no way to use it without the pin.  So that helps a little bit.

  • I was interested in doing this until I read that there is a fee.
