Gender Segregation in Education

I was reading an article about gender segregation in education and how it supposedly shows a substantial increase in learning gains for girls in mathematics and science. Their reasoning was such that it removed one element of peer pressure. The article stated there were noted improvements in boys' scores, but it didn't go into detail. There was some data about an overall improvement in behavior of all children and overall improvement in self esteem, but you can't really quantify those things,so....... meh

All that said would you support this movement?

How would you address gender vs sex?

Discuss.

  • Regardless of not reading the article, I think it's pushing the sexist envelope, especially when the matter of gender identification is brought into play. Anything can distract a child from sitting with rapt attention in a classroom. No matter how young, a person can learn a lot from being around the opposite sex. If a student, especially an older one, is serious enough about their learning the boy that has cooties is no big deal.

Yes they have all boys/ girls schools. Was there any comparison to their learning with the boys and girls that were separated?

Still looking for the actual article, but this one makes the same generic claims.

  • I honestly don't think girls lag behind all that much. I think time apart under the right circumstances could be beneficial. Maybe separate gym classes or health classes or whatever. Or occasional segregation of classes for special projects to entice healthy competition.

I don't think total segregation in public schools where kids are on the same campus is the right move, but occasionally separating them wouldn't hurt.

Comparing private single sex schools to public ones is like comparing apples and oranges. Everything about them is different.

  • I can't really say on an educational standpoint, but socially, segregating the genders (imo) is only going to encourage an even bigger gap between the sexes (which does it really need to be bigger than it already is?).  That space is only going to be filled with awkward silences, stunted socialization skills between those sexes from lack of interaction, and stereotypes bolstered by the imaginations of those sexes (without the opposite sex being present, to disprove them).

TL;DR: As far as education goes, I think the educational standard should be based on individual needs, not gender - and socially, it just seems like a really bad idea JMHO
