explain alternating tylenol and motrin, please :)

Re: explain alternating tylenol and motrin, please :)

  • Pedi said Motrin/Ibuprofen works way better for teething, so I'm only giving that - no Tylenol/Acetametophin (sp????)

  • My understanding is alternating is better than just one ... a doctor could explain more specifically.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • oooh....would also like to know!
  • Our doctor said the point of alternating was so that the baby isn't getting too much of one medicine.
  • We had to alternate tylenol/motrin and you give each 4 hours apart, so give tylenol now, two hours later motrin, two hours after that the tylenol again and keep repeating the cycle. This was for dd when he got a febrile seizure, and the dr said it was for better temp control. Have not heard of it for teething. GL!

Did I read this correctly? Alternate giving one of the 2 meds every TWO hours? I am sure they work in different ways and on diff receptors and all of that but wow I'd think that'd be alot of meds in one day.

  • Ok, maybe I'm just confused, but I swear I read on here before about alternating the two for teething pain.

She got Tylenol at like 1, so surely it is safe to give her Motrin now.

  • Tylenol is every 4 hours. Motrin is every 8. You stagger them because they work in different ways, and for different lengths of time, so as the Motrin is wearing off, the Tylenol is still going strong, and vice versa. Also, the Tylenol works on the fever, while the Motrin works on the swelling.

And this just makes me wonder something I've been wondering for freaking weeks. WTH is Chihuahua?

Sorry, I'm reading midnight sun online too and got confused...I meant alternating every 4 hours! Thanks for catching that!
