Babies: 6 - 9 Months

behavior/development concerns

I am kind of lurking from the 6-9 month board. My DD will be 9 months next Thursday. She has her 9 month check up at the end of the month, but I thought maybe I get some opinions from you ladies. There are just a few things that concern me about her behavior/development. She makes sounds but she doesn't say any words, like "dada" or "baba". When she sees her daddy she says something that sort of resembles "dada" but it's not clear whatsoever. She isn't affectionate-she will kind of push away when you give her hugs. She reaches for me, but when I try to love on her she gets a little agitated. Also, she doesn't have a favorite toy or lovey. There isn't anything she clings to or NEEDS to have.

Maybe this is all completely normal...I don't know, that's why I'm asking. Hoping you guys can give me some advice or at least put my mind at ease until we see the doctor. Thanks!

Re: behavior/development concerns

  • I don't know when they're supposed to start talking, but I think the lack of a lovey is completely normal.  Lots of kids just don't want or need them.  DD1 didn't take interest in a lovey or blanket or doll like that till she was well over a year.

Sounds normal to me.  MY DS does not have a lovey.  He has a blanket that he sleeps with, but it doesn't really bother him to have a different one.  There are times when my LO just wants to be held but not loved on.  He doesn't say any words, not even close to it.  Give us a heads up if your pedi gives you different information.

  • Normal. My DD does not have any words yet.  She has toys she likes more than others, but nothing she needs to have.  She is a very smiley girl and loves to laugh but she doesn't give hugs and doesn't want to be hugged- she is too interested in grabbing and moving around to be confined like that.

  • I wouldn't worry about the talking. She's still pretty young. A lot of kids don't have a lovey/blanket/etc. Totally normal! As far as the affection, maybe she just doesn't like being confined. She's a baby with her own personality and if she's not a cuddler right now that doesn't mean she will be that way forever. She sounds perfectly fine. Try not to overthink it so much.

I read that some babies just don't like to be hugged. Sounds normal.
