Baby Names

Nickname opinion

Grr the poll isn't working.

If our next baby is a boy we will name him Joseph Warren after our grandfathers. Joseph is too formal for my taste and we live in Texas so keep that in mind.

I was thinking either Joe or J.W. for a nickname, but I don't really like Joey so I worry that if we start calling him Joe that classmates might start calling him Joey.

What are your thoughts?

Re: Nickname opinion

  • I think there will be a Joey phase because its a common nickname for Joseph, but usually it shortens to Joe as they grow up. If you call him Joe from the start he may ask to be called that. I think JW could work too.

  • Deal with it when you get to that point. I'm assuming most people will call him Joe or JW, whatever family calls him

This. Except I really am not a fan of JW. I don't like initial nn's, especially when they have more syllables than the original name.

I'm not against initials as nicknames, but I wouldn't like the W. It turns a two letter nn into a 4 syllable word.

As far as Joey, I get what you mean about not wanting it. I steered clear of James because I didn't like any nicknames for it. However, after having two boys in school, I've come to realize that they call the shots as far as nn's go. My youngest son is Lucas - we named him that with the intention of calling him Luke (after my grandpa Luther nn Luke) but when he turned 5, he informed us that he wants to be called Lucas. That's what he is called in school - it never gets shortened. I still call him Luke, but he only "allows" it from family.

  • I grew up with a Joseph who went by Josh.  So, that's an option that avoids Joey.

I agree. There is a Joseph Christoper in my DD's class that goes by J.C. because that's what his parents call him.
