Potty Training

So we're working on potty training and having a little trouble.

She doesn't mind the feeling of going in the diaper but hates the way it feels when she goes in her big girl undies so i've been putting big girl undies on her. Problem is she tells us that she peed after she's already gone or going. How did ya'll make this change?

I was told to put her on the potty every hour. Well that didn't seem to be often enough so we switched to every 30 minutes. We're still having a little trouble though. This morning she went in her undies. I had her sit on the potty for a while and then changed her. Only 15 minutes later she peed in them again and came and told me she peed. So timing it isn't working and I haven't figured out how to get her to hold it or figure out she needs to. I don't know. I'm not sure what i'm doing. lol. Any advice?

Re: Potty Training

  • It could be that she's just not quite ready yet.  I wouldn't push the issue or make it a battle.  I think it's totally a developmental thing for them to learn to hold their pee - not something that you can force them to learn.  Keep putting her on the potty but if she comes to you right after she's already peed in her underwear, I wouldn't make her sit on the potty at that moment since her bladder is obviously empty.  New undies and then set your timer for 15 minutes then sit her on the potty.  We didn't train my oldest like that (we waited much longer until he was showing many signs of readiness because any earlier attempts were met with his incredible stubbornness) but I would imagine since your goal seems to be catching her before she feels the immediate urge to go that you're sending mixed signals when you sit her on the potty immediately after she's already gone.

    Good luck.

  • Let her run around naked and keep a potty near by. Rush her to the potty when she starts peeing. Gently remind her that pee pee goes in the potty. She should have it mostly figured out in less than a week, 3 days is what many say.

Are you sure she is ready? Here is a potty training readiness quiz.

  • She's a little young yet.

DD2 wants to use the potty and asks to use it. Takes her diaper (and all of her clothes, sigh) off when it gets  wet. But when we put her on it she doesn't actually pee. She just hasn't learned how to make herself pee yet.

They'll get there, just be patient.

  • We used the 3 day potty training method with DD and worked like a charm.  I have sent a copy of the book via email to MANY friends and it's worked for them.  Most within the 22-26 age range.  You can PM me your email address if you want a copy too.

  • To me and my mom who's a Pediatrician, it's way to early for potty training.
