Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Hemangioma

Any of your LOs have a hemangioma? Strawberry mark? Our doc said to just wait it out but we got a second opinion at a Hemangioma clinic at childrens hospital and looking or advice and help making a decision.

Re: Hemangioma

  • DS has one that popped up around 1 month.  Doc told me not to worry and that most go away by themselves. I'm not worried about it....it stopped growing around 6 months and has remained the same since.  It is on the side of his back.

  • DD has a small one on the back of her head....pedi doesn't seem concerned and it doesn't seem to bother DD, so we're not going to do anything about it. I just hope that now that she's stopped sleeping on her back (she rolls to her side), her hair will grow long enough to cover it so she won't ever have to worry about someone commenting on it.

  • Thanks everyone!!

My LOs is next to her right eye so there is concern of it effecting her vision. Our pedi just said to watch it over time and make sure it doesnt effect her vision. I got concerned becuase it was causing her eye to not open all the way in the mornings after waking up. I contact the Hemangioma clinic at the Childrens Hospital and they were concerned.

We started Timolol (topical gel) today. My hope is that we can just use this. They said it stops the growth of the H and then fades and naturally goes away.

They also talked to us about a more invasive treatment by using Propranolol which has side effects like high blood pressure and low blood sugar. Because of the low blood sugar they have to eat every 3-4 hours (even at night) to alleviate this concern.  She is almost 3 months old and starting to sleep through the night so I hate to have to adjust her sleep patterns after working so hard to get here. But I also don't want her vision to be damaged. I am so confused.

We go to the clinic next WED. to see the opthapologist to check on her vision and I plan on sitting down and talking to see if we can just use the topical gel to stop the growth, then let it fade in its own time. I don't mind it and it actually has become a part of her, but I don't want it to effect her health as well. DILEMMA!

DD has one on her right eyelid and her pediatrician has been pretty nonchalant about it. He said to keep our eye on it to make sure it doesn't start impeding her vision and that it will eventually go away on its own. At first we thought it was maybe a clogged duct, it is a swollen little patch that is kind of blueish. I am wondering if I might want to get a second opinion though? As long as it isn't harming her vision I'm fine with waiting it out to see if it goes away on its own. It's not *that* noticeable.

Would you mind if I PM you next week to see how your appointment goes? You are the first person I have encountered who is experiencing the eye issue.

  • DS doesn't have one but our friends' baby does.  It runs in their family so they have not been concerned.

Please do- I will let you know what they told us in our initial appt. We go to decide treatment and find out more next Wednesday.

  • DD has one on her forehead. Her pedi said not to worry about it as most fade away. But he did say if it was in a area that would cause an issue (eyes, mouth) that then they would do something. We've been measuring and tracking its growth just to make sure at some point it starts fading.

What I researched, at 3 months the mark will be 80% of the size it will eventually be. By 6 months it should start to fade.

For us personally, as long as it isn't causing her harm, I'm comfortable waiting it out. If it doesn't go away though, then we will likely take measures to remove it since it is on her forehead. I might get crap for saying this but since she's a girl, the last thing I want for my daughter is for her to have something to be self conscious about. While hair could cover it, why not make her life easier (if it comes down to that) and take measures to have it removed?

  • DS has one on his head, behind his ear. It showed up around one month and was the biggest around three and a half months... It is fading now. We have not followed up with other dr because it is doing exactly what the pedi said. However, if it were by his eye, nose, neck or an area that could impact health we certainly would have done exactly what you did !! good luck

My daughter was born with a hemangioma on the outside of her eyebrow.  It grew until she was 1, got to maybe the size of a nickel then slowly started shrinking. It bothered me at first because it was so bright and people thought it was a cut.  But she just turned three and you can barely see it.  Doesn't phase her in the least.  So even if it doesn't go away by a year, it will eventually!
