My 20 month old is still currently in the middle of the back seat rear facing. What has/will everyone do when they have baby #2? I want to place the car seats for 2 kids in the safest way possible!
DD1 was RFing in a convertible seat behind the driver, and DD2 was RFing in the infant seat behind the passenger. It was the only way to get two RFing seats in our car and still allow DH to drive.

I plan to put dd#1 rear facing behind the passenger seat in her convertible seat and dd#2 in the middle rear facing in the infant carrier. Well, that's the plan, anyway, we haven't tried it to see if they fit like that yet! If not, the infant carrier will go behind the passenger seat, dd#1 will go behind the driver seat.
DD (almost 3) is RFing behind the driver's seat and DS (almost 2) is RFing behind the passenger's seat. They are both in Graco MyRide 65's. We've had this same set up since our 2nd was born. We have no middle seat (captains seats in our SUV) so this was our only option.
My LO is RF in the middle seat, where she's always been. I installed the infant carseat behind the passenger seat using LATCH. I want to keep one seat in the back open for a passenger so my preference is to have them next to each other.
I just had the installation and configuration checked by a carseat tech today and it was fine. The seats can be placed next to each other as long as they aren't pressing on each other. In terms of what's safest, I think it comes down to what allows for proper installation of both seats and allows the driver to be comfortable.

Completely. Whatever is the best install for the seats and allows you to install correctly each time. For me, I don't have anyone in the middle because I can't tighten the belt as easily so I keep them both outbound. They are both RFing.
We were 2 under 2, now 3 under 3!
