Car seat help

we're replacing DS carseat, because it's a PIA to get him in it (britax boulevard).  so, we're either going to get the britax roundabout or marathon.  the roundabout only goes up to 40 lbs and the marathon goes up to 65 lbs.  do we NEED a carseat that goes up to 65 lbs?  won't DS be in a booster seat by then?  thanks for your input!

Re: Car seat help

  • We got the Marathon because it seems safer than a booster and we'd like to keep her in it as long as possible.  From what I understand, a booster is only for when they always sit upright and never fall asleep in the car, so I wasn't sure when DD would get to that point, either.

  • My DD will be 7 before she hits 40 pounds.  I would look at height, not weight.  She will outgrow the roundabout about 4.5, but she is not a big kid.  You might look at the sunshine kids seat, that is what I am getting for DD next, but she could use it now.
  • My DD outgrew her Roundabout before she was 2.5 and is much too young for a booster.  I'm still glad we had the seat because it made airline travel easy those first 2.5 years (since the Roundabout is pretty compact).

    My DD is quite tall.

  • He will likely outgrow the Roundabout for height pretty quickly; it's a very short seat.

2 that were recommended to me by thecarseatlady.com were the Graco Nautilus and the Safeguard Go, which start as 5 pt harnesses and convert to boosters.

  • I would get the Graco Nautilus..We have the Roundabout and she was cramped in it and outgrowing it in height.  THe Nautilus is a fabulous seat..we all love it...got it on Amazon for around $125 and free shipping.  It will last longer than another Britax
  • I love our Marathon.  My DD is 39lbs at 2.5...so the Round-a-bout would have been a watse of money.
  • The "avg." to outgrow the Roundabouts is 4 years old.  The limit is 40 inches and 40 lbs.  Most parents prefer to keep their kids in a 5 pt. harness until 65 lbs. these days.

Since I just had another baby anyway, we bought the Graco Nautilus for our older daughter, which is a great seat for the price.  Very comparable to a Britax as far as comfort, safety, and ease of use.  My son will use our Roundabouts and then eventually upgrade to something else too.
