Just wondering when you all stopped taking you lo's temp rectally. Do you use a different type of thermometer under the arm pit? Can they hold still long enough to put it in their mouths?
We use a temporal lobe thermometer. You just run it across the forehead. It takes maybe 2 seconds. They use them at our doctor's office, and they recommended it when DD1 was an infant.

I stopped using the rectal thermometer when they got tubes and the chronic ear infections stopped - 10 months for DD2 and 14 months for DD1. We've been using an ear thermometer instead, the same one our pedi's office uses.

We only used rectal thermometers when DS was under 1 and had a high axillary temp. We have an ear thermometer and a no touch temporal thermometer. We also still do an axillary temp sometimes. At 3.5 years we still don't do oral temps.
We used the rectal until about 12-18 months. We now use an ear thermometer. It's what they use at the ped office. There is no way my son would hold still long enough for an oral or underarm reading.
We stopped taking his temperature rectally when he stopped laying still for it. We're going to but a temporal lobe thermometer soon. We've been trying under the arm, but he won't sit still for that either.
I guess I'm in the minority. I will use the ear thermometer as a screening temp, but if he has a high fever and I need to make sure it is accurate...he still gets it in the bum.
Formerly Jaxmom1 - now Jaxmom11 because of a bump fart!
I have been lucky enough that DS1 has not been sick that often but I will tell you that when he got sick recently at 33 months there was no way in heck he was going to let me get near him with a rectal thermometer. I bought an ear one and have been using it but I don't trust it. This is a question I'm going to ask at his 3 year well visit.
Re: Thermometer...bum? armpit?
OK, I thought I was posting on the 0-3 month board so I deleted my post, lol.
For DS1 (3) we use an ear thermometer. We started using that over an underarm one at maybe like 2.5?
