Food Allergy

congestion/cough/puffy eyes

My daughter was diagnosed as mspi at one month old.she had blood in her stool, horrible gas & extreme colic. i cut all dairy/soy out of my diet & did a combination of bf'ing & neocate formula. i tried soy yogurt at 1 & it was a failure. a month ago (17 months old) I introduced baked in soy & worked up to edamame & she seemed to be doing fine with that for about 2 weeks. About 3 weeks ago, I introduced baked in dairy in Earth's Best Toddler's biscuit & then tried a spoon of the Plum Organic pouches that have yogurt mixed in. She was extremely gassy but otherwise seemed ok.

However, ever since I introduced this things (especially the hidden dairy & yogurt) she has had non-stop congestion. eye puffiness, & hacking cough. i thought at first it was seasonal allergies but now I am wondering if it has to do with the dairy. Would MSPI cause this type of reaction? There is no visible blood in the stool & besides very bad gas, she doesn't have diarrhea.

 Sorry so long!

Re: congestion/cough/puffy eyes

  • Has she seen a pediatric allergist for testing? The eye puffiness would really concern me. DD1 has a true dairy allergy (along with allergies to soy and eggs). She was always congested prior to being dairy free. She would get hives where dairy or eggs would touch her skin. That's what led us to allergy testing.

DD2 is MSPI and has tested negative for a true dairy/soy allergy thus far. I eliminated dairy/soy from my diet and her GI symptoms resolved. So two kiddos, different symptoms, different diagnoses, same culprits.

I would discontinue any form of dairy or soy and see a pedi allergist for testing.

i skin-tested her at 3 months & 9 months. at 3 months, all was negative. at 9 months, it was a "very mlld positive" for milk but they weren't really sure b/c it was just a tiny bit. i went to her reg dr today & he told me to take her off just the dairy b/c she seemed to be doing ok w/ the soy & try that again in july when the seasonal allergies wouldn't be as bad.
