4 Month Appointment 2 Months Late?

Hi All --

My son just turned 4 months old and we're scheduled for his regular pediatrician's 4 month visit late this week. We now also have a funeral to attend at this time. I'm trying my hardest to reschedule his appointment, but the pediatrician's office keeps saying that there is nothing available until late August. Is it OK to basically skip his 4 month visit and just go to the 6 month appointment? That seems to be what they are suggesting. At this point, I'm not sure what to do...

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Kate

Re: 4 Month Appointment 2 Months Late?

  • I know that we are getting another round of immunizations at four months, and then again (I believe) at six months. For us, delaying the four month appointment by two month would disrupt the booster series and our doctor would find a way to squeeze us in, but there are also three pediatricians and three PA's in the office that can help accommodate these types of issues.

I would call and leave a message for your nurse with the concern. In the past I have learned that the schedulers go by the schedule, but the nurses are aware of the necessity (or lack there of) that may be present with each individual case. The nurse can tell the scheduler to make room, whereas on her own the scheduler just does her job.

  • I had to delay DD1's 4 month appt way back when, and although it delayed vaccines, they managed to catch completely up by our 9 month visit. I think you should be alright, but it's up to you.

  • I would really try not to wait that long for an appointment. We're doing the normal vaccine routine so it wouldn't go over well to go that long between appointments. Maybe show up to the appointment really early to see if you can be squeezed in earlier?
  • Maybe you could reschedule a nurse visit only just for vaccines.

That said, I would not feel comfortable with a pedi office who books so far in advance and has no wiggle room for changes.

    Good luck.

  • I wouldn't be satisfied with waiting two months....I'd call and explain the situation...is there anyone else that can take him?

  • I don't know if this works with your office but a couple times I've asked to be put on a list that if they have any cancellations they call me. That being said I'm still on mat leave so my schedule is pretty flexible they usually call pretty last minute.

  • If you're getting vaccines, I'd call back and explain the situation and get them to so better. Our immunizations are done through the public health nurse, so our Dr visit is just a check up (which the nurse does too) so I wouldn't mind skipping it.

  • Thanks All! I called again and this time, spoke with a more experienced receptionist and re-explained the situation. She said that I didn't need to wait and she squeezed me in for early next week.

Thanks again for all your advice!
