Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

moms with big babies

DS just turned 12 months, we were at the pediatrician Wednesday and he's 27 lbs.  Friday he had a high fever, I took him back and he has an ear infection.  I've been giving him antibiotics and motrin all weekend and he still has a fever and its just miserable.  He'll be ok for a few hours, then the fever comes right back.  I'm calling the dr again tomorrow because in the past a day after the meds he's fine.  I looked at the motrin and it's for 6-23 months, but the dosage only goes up to 23 lbs.  If you have a big baby are you using children's medicine?

Re: moms with big babies

  • The meds will not tell you to dose above that because of liability reasons. Look up dosage for weight online or call your docs triage nurse for the correct dose. Dosing at 23 pounds isn't enough if your LO needs it. You can use childrens or infants motrin for any child regardless of weight- infants is more concentrated.

  • Yep, my 20-month-old is 30lbs, so we've been using children's Motrin for a while. He gets 1 tsp.

  • You can find dosing charts by weight online, that's what we've always used for dd, since she's always been bigger than her age suggests.

  • My pediatrician says to go by weight.  So you need to be using the children's rather than infant.

  • https://www.stlouischildrens.org/articles/kidcare/ibuprofen-dosage-table According to this chart, your LO should get 2.5 ML of infants or a tsp of children's for their weight range.. GL!

  • we usually ask a pharmacist
  • Our pediatrician gave us a chart that shows the correct dosage for the basic meds by weight.  We use it religiously.

  • You should definitely call the drs office and talk to a nurse about this because the dosing also varies by concentration of the medicine. For example a pp said she gives her 30lb 1tsp of motrin however I give my 30lb 2.5tsp of motrin. Most likely because her motrin is a different concentration and so you need to find out specifically what dosage you need for not just his weightbut for the exact medicine you are uusing

  • I was just at my LO's 1 yr appt and my pedi said based on his size (26.5 lbs) he can have children's Tylenol, Ibuprofen and allergy meds.  So we recently bought the children's Tylenol for teething purposes and have used it a few times.

No. I am a pediatric RN and you are giving the wrong dose. There are only two concentrations- infants (more concentrated) and childrens (less concentrated). Infants is 50mg per 1.25 MLs (NOT tsp) and childrens is 100mg per 5 mls. Your childs dose is 100 mg at 30 pounds. You are giving LO way too much medicine- please reconsider the dose as over time, your LO can have negative side effects with the higher dose.
