Secondary IF

1st IVF and nervous! UPDATE

*I did it...took the meds.  I had done Gonal before so no biggie there but the Menopur was new.  Not horrible.  I had psyched myself out for the burning.  I just went slow and stopped as it burned.  DONE!

Hi everyone,

I start Gonal and Menapur today and I am just an absolute ball of nerves.  I am nervous of the meds (especially the ones I have to take intermuscularly!) and I am also nervous about transferring 2 embryo's.  I keep going back and forth . I have lower AMH 1.22 so I am not even sure how many I will get through this process.

UGH...Can anyone off any words of advice?

Re: 1st IVF and nervous! UPDATE

  • The shots really aren't that bad. The Sub Q ones are a piece of cake once you get used to them. Make sure you let the alcohol on your skin dry or they'll burn.

The IM ones I DREADED too, but honestly, you can stick a needle in my eye ball at this point. You get used to it. The worst part is the soreness the next day because the PIO is so thick. After the shot, take a hot shower or put a heating pad on it to help break up the oil. And move around on it so you work the muscle. But honestly, they aren't so bad.

The process is stressful, but it's worth it. You can always wait to see what your embryos look like before you decide how many to transfer as well. Don't stress about that decision until it's time to make it, and your RE will help you with that by giving you a recommendation.

    Good luck!!

Thank you!!! I totally needed that!!!!

  • No problem!!! Happy to help!!
  • Best of luck to you!  I'm still waiting to finish my first attempt at IVF.  Honestly, I thought once we made the decision to do it, things would just fall into place. Unfortunately, I didn't respond well to the first protocol and the second time, they found a cycst at my baseline appt and said we could't proceed.  My doctor told me there was a possibility we wouldn't have enough follicles to make it worthwhile to do the retrieval, but I wasn't really prepared for that to happen.  I was pretty disappointed.
DD conceived naturally in 2009.  TTC #2 since August 2010.  Praying for guidance as we decide what's next.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your IF diagnosis?  There are so many reasons to be nervous about IVF.  I didn't even factor in poor response!

  • Glad it wasn't as bad as expected! I'm nervous to give myself shots! Although, the needle was surprisingly smaller than expected when I got my meds today.

    Good luck this cycle!

I don't mind at all and I'm sorry if I gave you something else to worry about.  I hope you have a great response the first time around!  We have unexplained secondary IF. I conceived DD easily within a couple months but we've been trying for #2 since Aug 2010.  I just turned 37 and DH is 38 so the only "reason" I can think of is my age.  But who really knows.  If nothing else, this board has shown me there's really no rhyme or reason to any of this.  What works for one of us, doesn't work for others.  I think that's what makes this journey so stressful and frustrating.  Praying you will do well and this will be it for you!!  Good luck!

  • Yes, you do get used to the shots, actually the Progesterone doesn't even hurt me, it just takes forever to go in because its so thick so mentally its freaky! I ordered the generic menopur and Bravelle from Europe (waaaaaay cheaper) only prob is the menopur is IM there, that did hurt. I had local reactions to the ganarelix/cetrotide and the trigger shot. It was just a bit swollen and itchy for an hour though. (I had to be on the ganareliz and cetrotide because I ovulate too early.) Yesterday I had the embryo transfer done and am super excited but worried that I shouldn't be...its such an emotional roller coaster :( We chose to put 2 in, the dr said based on the grade of the embryos (I guess they rate them for quality) they choose how many. He said with 3 grade 1's (the best) too high a risk for triplets. I had 2 grade 1's put in, he said decent chance for twins, but I actually wouldn't mind twins after this journey! He said also increases your odds of at least one working! Good luck to you and keep me posted ladies!
