Trying to Get Pregnant

21 Day Progestrone Draw

I went to the doc's yesterday.  She said that I needed to get labs done on day 21 of my cycle.  Has anyone had this done before?  She didn't say too much about it - just that it needed to be done.  What are they looking for?

Also, I've been on progestrone (Provera) for the last 3 months - it was to help regulate my periods because I wasn't having them.  She said that we would see how my body does without the Provera.  (I've also lost 30 lbs)  Has anyone had regular periods after they were taken off Provera?  Have you ovulated after weight loss?

Re: 21 Day Progestrone Draw

  • The cd21 test is really only telling if you o'd on or near cd14.  The progesterone check is to see if you ovulate.

I don't understand the Provera for 3 months... do you mean you've taken it to end your last 3 cycles?

  • No.  I got off BC in June and went until August with no period at all.  Finally, my doctor put me on Provera so that I would have a period.  I took 10 mg for 10 days.  After the 10th day, it would take like 2-4 days for AF to start.  Does that make more sense? And then AF would last like 4-5 days.

  • Yes it makes more sense.  Some people do jump back to a regular cycle... the Provera kinda kicks their body into gear.  I did not, and have had to take Provera to end all of my cycles.  I am also not ovulating, which is why.  You should probably start charting to see if you are ovulating.  A CD21 test won't do you any good at all if you don't ovulate until around that time.  The test really should be called a 7dpo progesterone check.

  • I should also add that I have not lost any weight, but I didn't need to.  That is not a cause for my annovulation.

  • That last post of mind sounded snarky and I didn't mean it to. :)  I just meant that weight hasn't played into whether or not I ovulate.  Good for you for losing 30 pounds... that is awesome!

  • Well, I do chart (on pen and paper, not with FF) and I do see a thermal shift, but it always happens at the same time I start my Provera.  Usually around CD20 - so I don't know if I'm ovulating or if it's just the Provera causing that rise in temperature.  I guess this test will tell.  Thanks for the info.  But what do you mean by a 7dpo? I guess I'm new to the terminology.

  • You didn't sound snarky - and thanks.  It's been tough.

  • 7 days past ovulation.

And I thought you had only taken the Provera the one time.  And it would have been WAY later than CD 20. I am confused. Confused

Provera can cause increased temps... I usually stop temping when I take Provera b/c it throws everything off.

  • I'm sorry this is confusing.  I've taken Provera for 3 months in a row now.  My CD1 usually starts toward the end of the month, like around the 25th or so.  And I start my Provera on the 13th of every month - so that would be right around CD19/20.

  • I honestly don't think you should be starting Provera at the same time every month.  You aren't really giving your body a chance to regulate.

I took Provera for the first time after no AF for 80 days. The next cycle, I gave myself (well, my doctor gave me) 60 days.  I was able to give my body a chance to O (it didn't) and to see if I would get a period on my own (I didn't).  My next cycles I waited until CD 35 before I even started Provera, took the 10 days worth (on to CD 45) and waited for AF to start.  I am confused as to why you are starting the pills at the same time every month, on the same day every month.  I have never heard anything like that.

  • I have no idea either.  Just doing what the doctor ordered.  I'm new to all this stuff so that's why I'm here.  I had no idea that taking it at the same time every month would be unusual.  I was supposed to start the pills again today for the 4th time, but my doctor told me to not take them for a couple of months to see what would happen - to see if my body has regulated itself (and to see if the weight loss has helped).  Think I need a second opinion??

  • I do not claim to be an expert, but yes, I would get a second opinion if you are starting provera on CD 19 or 20 every month.  LOTS and LOTS of people do not ovulate until that time, or even well past that time.  CD 35 is the earliest I have ever heard of even starting Provera, and that is with documented annovulatory cycles and no periods.

  • Hmmm... mabye I will make an appointment with another doctor just to see what they have to say.  And maybe I'll ovulate this cycle now that I'm off of Provera.  And maybe if I don't have a period by CD 35, I'll self-medicate and start the Provera on my own.  Lol.  This is all just so new to me.  Thanks for all the advice and help.  You were wonderful.

  • I really don't think you should self-medicate.  You shouldn't take Provera until you have confirmed ovulation, if ovulation is to occur.  I agree with the poster on TTTC - you really should read TCOYF, chart on FF, and start doing opk's.  I also think an appointment with a new doc is in order.  You certainly don't want to screw with your cycles.  GL!
