Anyone else with tearing not healed yet?

Sorry if this post is TMI. I had second degree tearing, 1 internal and 2 external, all were stitched and seemed to heal fine. At my 6 week check up it was still very painful to stand much or put any pressure on the area, and the Dr said it would heal with time. Once it fully healed you could see that the 2 ext tears came together and the stitches created an extra flap of scar tissue causing a lip at the bottom of the vagina. Basically the opening is too small and painful to touch. Naturally, we haven't DTD yet and DH is beyond frustrated.  I have an appt later this month to discuss repair options.

Did anyone else have issues healing or need reconstruction? I thought I recalled some people with 3rd and 4th degree tears from the birth stories, so I can imagine that would be a long road healing wise.

  • I had a 4th with DS, I wish I would have had surgery, I have terrible leakage and the small tear with DD made it SO much worse.
It took at least six months for sex to be ok last time and it was achy for a while. I'm still achy this time, I figure it will heal some day....

  • Mine still hurts when we DTD and to the touch. Also, some underwear! No advice but defiantly some sympathy!

  • I had a third degree tear and an internal tear. My doctor basically told me at my six week that I had healed excepionally well. However, I still had a lot of pain at the bottom. He explained that when I was stitched back up the opening was made tighter because the skin needed to be stitched together and that I should take it slow and it will eventually stretch back out. He didn't mentioned anything about scar tissue and I haven't tried to look. Sex felt impossible at first but it does keep getting better.

  • I have something similar actually - They had to cut me and then she came too fast for them to deliver the shoulders, so I tore too. It's healed, but there is a lip there (that's a good word for it) of scar tissue. Day-to-day, it's not too bad, but I do feel like fluid collects on it sometimes and then like I'm leaking big time when I stand up. I've been debating whether to go back in (my OB said that she could remove it if it became a problem), or whether I should just wait until #2 comes through there.

  • I had a fourth degree tear also. However I am fully healed. Maybe I just got really lucky. IDK. I actually pulled a few stitches a week after I gave birth. They did nothing to fix it and said it would heal by itself which it did. We DTD 6 weeks post pardum. It was painful and we had to take it slow for like 2-3 weeks but now we are completely back to normal.

  • My tear was only first degree but I had the exact same thing happen with the scar tissue. It was terribly painful and for some reason, was constantly raw (if that's a good word?). My clue that it was not okay was that it would occasionally bleed, especially after sex (which was painful at most and uncomfortable at best).

At my eight week PP appointment my midwife cauterized it, and said I would be good to go in two to three days. Two weeks later it still wasn't okay, and I ended up having to have a procedure where they cut the tissue off and cauterized it to heal it so the scar tissue wouldn't re-grow as aggressively. I call it my vagina repair. lol. anyways, it was really expensive BUT it fixed the problem.

I am still a little tender, but SO much better. If it is more than 8 weeks PP and it is still too painful to have sex it is not normal (or atleast that is what my midwife told me).  GL!

I don't want to pry, but I'm wondering about the expensive part since that's what I'd need done too. Was it covered by insurance?

  • I was given an episiotomy with DS and was told it was 1st degree. It wasnt healing correctly and after 3 follow up appointments my midwife referred me to a pelvic floor specialist at the University of Michigan hospital (which is 5.5 hrs away). 1.5 weeks after my consultation at UofM I was back there having a sphincteroplasty because my episiotomy was actually a 3rd degree laceration. The Dr. had cut ALL the way through my muscle. I am so grateful for the amazing Dr's at UofM. I am feeling 100% better now and feel almost back to my old self. If you still aren't feeling like you are healing correctly I urge you to go somewhere to get a second opinion!
  • Thanks for sharing, ladies! I figured it wasn't normal, but was hoping it'd heal eventually. The joys of motherhood lol.

  • Since DD was born in December- and I didn't get it "fixed" until after the first of the year my crazy high deductible re-set. So for me, it wasn't covered by insurance, and I don't know if it would have been if my deductible had already been met or not. The total procedure was a little over a thousand dollars :(
