March 2013 Moms

Sleep Regression, ugh!

The past three nights have been brutal. My little guy had not been STTN yet, but was only waking up around 2am and then again at 5am and then usually back to sleep for an hour or two. Totally enough sleep for me, so I felt fine during the day. The past few nights he has been waking every 1.5 to 2 hours, even sometimes 1 hour. WTF?

He is 11.5 weeks, but was born 6 days early, so I would think it is too early for the 12 week growth spurt. And he has been OK during the day. Any insight, commiseration, or suggestions? I am exhausted and start back at work Monday so I am worried for that.

  • Oh man, I'm sorry!  That does not sound fun.  I would say it could still be a growth spurt, they don't always happen right on 'schedule'.  Is he eating more during the day, too?  I hope it passes soon!

  • Could be growth spurt or wonder weekor just being a baby. Did you change your routine at all? My LO STTN but we had my dad an step mom watch her on Friday so we could go out for my birthday, and she woke up at 12 and 230 that night which she NEVER does. She was exhausted and took two super long naps the next day and slept 630 to 700 the next night haha. My dad and step mom sort of followed our routine but left her door open and didn't swaddle her tightly so she never really fell asleep. Plus not mom or dad putting her down probabley threw her off....

We did just slightly. We were putting him down for bedtime in his RnP downstairs in the room next to us so that it would be easier to go get him if needed. Then we would move him upstairs when we went to bed. We just started doing his bedtime routine (swaddle, feed, rock if needed) upstairs in our room, which is where he sleeps at night. So maybe that has thrown him off. Or its a growth spurt, wonder week, or just plain old unpredictable babyness. I guess I will just roll with it and cross my fingers it passes soon.Of course, he is taking a super long nap right now, the little scoundrel!

Oh and coffee is an utter necessity for me these days. I really don't think I could function in the morning without it.

  • My DD is 13 weeks and she has never STTN but she'd sleep 3 hour stretches but the last 3 nights she's back to waking up every hour to 1.5. :(

My LO never ever sleeps past the 45 minute arousal AND wakes up consistently around 6/630, and the day after my dad and stepmom came she slept from that 230 until 700, down from 830 to 11 without a peep then from 230 to 5 with a catnap in the sling in the middle. she was EXHAUSTED. I'm not sure if it was the crappy swaddle (she broke out at 12), the door open (when we got home at 9 i looked on the monitor and she was awake but just not making noise, and my step mom said they left the door open, and my step mom is LOUD so she probably couldn't sleep. she also said when she checked the monitor at 8 her eyes were open as well. Or just the fact that it wasn't Jay or me doing it, but ya she slept like crap that night, then slept all day the next day. she also ate those two times she got up, but she also has been eating like a horse since Monday so who knows.

    Crazy babies

  • It could e worse, I know! I'm just thankful I don't have to go back to work with my LO#2. She won't sleep - period - unless she's touching me. 13 weeks and counting today and she's only slept for at least 3 hours + 2x - both in the first few weeks! From my experience with my first, I would say that your little peanut is just going through or approaching a growth spurt and just to do your best to offer as much as possible at each "meal." Hopefully it will pass soon. :-)
  • I wouldn't call it a regression. Babies' sleep patterns can change countless times in the first year. I've operated under the philosophy, "Once LO seems to get into a recognizable schedule, expect it to change." Hang in there, mama!
