My pediatrician advised us to start cereal at 4 months with our older son. He was exclusively formula fed, so I do not know if that made a difference or not regarding the recommendation. My new baby is ALWAYS hungry and I suspect the same suggestion will be made at his next check-up (the 4 month one).
Son #1 is already 2!
Not too much longer until Son No.2 arrives!
My son is getting cereal right now for reflux, I started him on oatmeal instead of rice because it has more nutritional value than rice and less prone to constipation. If you see people on here saying they feed little one cereal, most likely it is because they have reflux.
At 4 months I will introduce veggies. I know he will be ready at that time since he is already interested in me eating and trying to mimic movements...all he needs is to hold his head up and lose the tongue thrust reflex.
It's not recommended to start solids until 4-6 months. Our ped doesn't even recommend cereal first and says that veggies and fruits are fine to start since cereal has little nutritional value and is difficult to digest.
When DD is ready, we will start with avocado.
What made you decide to start with avocado? Just curious... FTM and new at this.

How do you know he will be ready? You have no idea when he'll lose the tongue thrust reflex. He should be able to sit up pretty well, too, to start solids.
Why do you like to nitpick every little thing I say?
Of course I know he has to sit up unassisted, and of course I don't know exactly when he will lose his reflex, though signs point more towards earlier than later since i see him playing with the cereal in his mouth. So anything else you want to add? Should I not be giving him cereal for his reflux because it is oh so dangerous? I should just start with the drugs first, lol.

The rec is to start solids at 6 months, which we did with DS1 and will be doing with DS2. We started DS1 with avocado and will likely start DS2 with it as well. We skipped cereals but when he was on 2 or 3 meals a day (not till 8 months or so) we did introduce oatmeal, mostly as something easy for daycare to feed him.
I have no idea who you are, so if I've commented on your posts before, it's a coincidence.
You said "I know he will be ready at that time since he is already interested in me eating and trying to mimic movements...all he needs is to hold his head up and lose the tongue thrust reflex. "
I was commenting on that. You said you knew he would be ready at 4 months. Nothing about sitting up unassisted. Unless your 2 month old can already do that.
I have not had a child w/ reflux so I have no idea what I would choose, but I have not judged anyone for medicating for it whether w/ prescription meds or cereal.
You were also commenting on how I wouldn't know when he would lose his tongue thrust, well anyone with half a brain would know this. I cannot pick a date on the calender and say "WHELP SON YOU WILL LOSE THAT REFLEX HERE AT 9AM." I did say I know it will be around 4 months, who knows it might be 4 months and a day... or closer to the 5 month mark. All I know it will be sooner than later with him.
I don't have to lay out each detail either, I know when to start solids. Not everyone with one child in their ticker has only raised/is raising one child.
Also, each time you seem like you have to chime in, you do tend to gravitate to my posts because you apparently think just because I am not laying out a detailed plan on something, I must not know the details.

Huh, well, the funny thing is, I can only go by what you put out there. I could care less how many kids someone has, someone could have 5 kids and still know nothing.
There you go with the assuming. The last time you tried to call me out on something I already knew I told you it wasn't wise to assume. Here you are doing it again, and here I am, again, telling you it isn't wise to assume.

This is what I'm interested in doing too. My friend said it was easy because it was a food that they already had on hand, and it's really easy to mash up for baby.
I never fed either of my two kids rice cereal as infants, and never plan to with my third one coming. I offered oatmeal after a year as a breakfast option. Oatmeal has nutrients, but is very hard for babies to digest. And rice cereal...well my approach to feeding my kids is to feed them natural, nutrient dense foods with a lot of fat (egg yolk, butter, avocado, whole milk yogurt) in addition to a mix of fruits and some vegetables. I also go by signs of readiness for when baby is ready for anything other than breastmilk, and that doesn't happen before 6 mo in our family. It's been closer to 7mo so far.
And for any reflux issues, I go first to infant probiotics, mom's diet if breastfeeding, and looking to heal baby's gut imbalance. I'd also seek gentle chiropractic care for any case of reflux. Not everyone has that approach...mine is fairly natural and not very mainstream from what most pedis will say.

This website was really helpful when I started solids with DD: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/
It gives great tips on when to start, what to start with, pur?e recipes, etc. It is a great resource!
