Mosquito bites

DS got two mosquito bites last night. One on his back and one on his forehead. They are hugely swollen. Bigger than the diameter of a quarter, and bright red. The one on his forehead is so swollen it looks like a goose egg. They don't seem to be bothering him so I haven't given him anything. I was just wondering if anyone else's LO has had mosquito bites like this. Do young kids just have bigger reactions to bites, or maybe DS is allergic?

I feel bad. I usually use California baby bug spray if we are outside, but these suckers snuck in the house when DH was putting in a window air conditioning unit. Guess its that time of year.

Re: Mosquito bites

  • Audrey Oliver have  horrible reactions, so does MH.  It sound just like what you described, both MH and Audrey have sensitive skin too.  When I get bit I get no reaction, you can't even see where they bit.

I have always had bad reactions to mosquito bites and my reaction sounds similar to what you described. As I have gotten older my reactions have been less sever, but as a child, oh man it was bad. I would swell really bad and if I got a lot I would be out for days. If you notice that they keep getting bad or take more than a week to clear up I would talk to a doctor, Because I had to take allergy meds for them. Also if they start weeping I would get them checked out too.

I used to have horrible reactions like that.  I've had one mosquito bite cover 1/4 of my leg before!  I also had one close to my eye that made my entire face swell like mad and my eye swell shut.  It sucks and is itchy, but doesn't hurt.  And it has gotten better as I got older, if that's any comfort.  (Except when I lived in Colombia, and I guess their mosquitoes are different than North American ones and my reactions went crazy again.)

  • Thanks ladies. I'll keep an eye on them, but hopefully they go away soon. My DH never gets bit. Like ever. I, however, can go outside for 2 minutes and get 20 bites in that time. It sucks. I've never had a reaction even close to what DS has though. Just small itchy bites. That's why I was surprised to see how bad his bites got. Hopefully he'll grow out of it.
  • I get those, the Benadryl cream or hydrocortisone cream makes the swelling go down and the itch stop usually.

I hope your DS is like your H in terms of attracting them.  My mom used to have really bad reactions when she was younger (she'd get blisters on top of her bites!), but she didn't get bit often.  My dad attracted mosquitoes like crazy, but didn't have bad reactions.  I, unfortunately, attract them like crazy like my dad and react badly like my mom.  Sucks.

  • Mosquitos love me and I have bad reactions as well.

This past weekend, I was sitting outside for 30 min and had to go inside early due to getting so many bites. H, though, sat outside for an additional hour & didn't get any (this is how it normally goes; nothing to do with being pregnant). Then, they swell up to become huge welts.

Hydrocortisone &/or benedryl seems to be the only things that semi-help.

  • DD gets terrible reactions. It swells up huge and then bubbles up almost like a burn and scabs over and lasts for a long time. She always seems to get bit on the face too. Her eye has been swollen shut twice and her lip looked like she'd sneaked out for collagen injections. I have found it helps if I give her allergy medicine as soon as I see that she was bit and then I put benedryl cream on the spot. She never seems bothered by the bites either.
