Induction for polyhydramnios?

Hi Ladies,

I had an ultrasound today (second one in a week), which confirms I have mild polyhydramnios. I am currently 39 weeks 6 days, and my OB wants to induce toward the end of this week due to risk of cord prolapse and placental abruption. I have been planning an all natural birth and studying hypnobirthing, so the thought of having my OB rupture my membranes and start me on pitocin is terrifying! Does anyone have any experience with this? Are there any other tests or procedures I should be requesting?

 Thank you for your help!

  • You said it was mild so its BS. Why did you have the ultrasound in the first place? Anytime they "look" for something, they will find it. Is your baby engaged and deep in your pelvis? If so, the chance of a prolapse is lower. If not, you need more time anyway- OR there is a reason for that (baby position, size, pelvic size, etc). Try to hold off- Good luck!

I have seen two OB's now, the first wasn't concerned at all, the second ordered the second ultrasound. I'm definitely going to ask more questions, such as whether or not there has been an increase in the fluid since my first ultrasound. The first OB told me that the head was nice and low so the chance of prolapse was unlikely. I have another appointment (with yet a different OB on Monday), so I am thinking I will wait to see what happens at least until then. Baby is only estimated 6 lb 10 oz at this point, and I'm getting lots of movement, so I don't really think there is a big risk, and I should be okay to bide my time for at least a little while. I hadn't even thought to decline the ultrasound. Thanks for the encouragement... I will try to hold off.

  • AROM isn't recommended w excess amniotic fluid. I would just do nothing, in all honesty.

Based on this info I would definitely be wanting that 3rd opinion. Hopefully it's an unbiased one.
