Ugh, pinkeye WWYD?

My 19 m/o has pinkeye, I'm sure of it. Her eyes are swollen, red, and are oozing green discharge. From what I've been reading, pinkeye can be either viral (which you just have to wait out) or bacterial (which they rx antibiotics for). But everything says you should definitely have a doctor evaluate it ASAP to determine.

Of course this is Saturday afternoon when her pedi is closed. There's not even an urgent care clinic open anywhere around here. So I guess the only thing we could do is bring her to the ER or drive way across town for an urgent care that is open. Not to mention that DH is at work until 7, and I really, really don't want to singlehandedly lug both kids out for this, so it would definitely make a late night for her (her bedtime is 7:30 and I don't think she's feeling great either).

Or should we just try to clean it up as much as we can and wait until Monday? DH works ALL DAY again tomorrow so taking her then isn't an option, unless it's in the evening again like today. I feel so bad for her - she keeps saying "eyes" and trying to itch and wipe at them.

Oh, we have no family here and finding someone to watch the baby isn't an option, there's no one who can really.

  • I would pack the baby up and go to the Urgent Care right now.  The sooner you get dorps for her eyes, the sooner she gets better.  Also to add to the joy, she is contagious.  So until she has drops, you need to be ultra extra careful around the baby so that she doesn't get it too.

Your older dd will be contagious for 24 hours AFTER the first round of drops if she has the bacterial pink eye.  If she has the viral, I am so sorry for her.  I had the viral pink eye around Holloween, and I still have lingering affects.

FWIW, most Urgent Cares allow  you to get on their list via the internet.  Do that, and they will call you 30 minutes before they can see you.  That may help with the baby.

  • I have had pink eye several times and it is really miserable!   I would definitely go to the er, or urgent care if possible.  The drops will clear it up within 2 days and also help with the pain.  In the meantime, if you absolutely can't take her you can hold a warm wash cloth over her eye (but make sure you don't put it on the other eye, or reuse it).  Being so little, she is likely to spread it to the other one by rubbing.  Poor baby!
  • Can you call your ped office? Ours has a triage nurse on duty all the time and they said they'd rather come in after hours than have you go to the ER/Urgent Care where they're not accustomed to dealing with small kids. I also wouldn't want to bring my newborn into an ER/Urgent Care because that's where all the sick people are!

DD had a clogged tear duct when she was a baby and she had green stuff oozing from her eyes that was making them stick together. They gave us drops and she was fine.

GL! We also have no family in the area, and though we only have one child, it really makes it difficult sometimes!

  • ?I would first call your doctor on call, if they have one and then if you don't get a good answer there...get to an ER or Urgent care. Urgent care is better since it will cost less...unless you just have a basic co pay insurance. If you have a PPO then you might pay an % of the ER cost. So I'd make the drive to the Urgent care if it was my child.
  • Ditto on pp. Wouldn't wait until Monday... too far away. That's super uncomfortable! One way to tell viral vs bacterial is if DD has recently had a cold or other viral illness, could be viral. Otherwise, is usually bacterial. Either way, should be treated as the worst kind so as to avoid spreading it to sibling or parent. Go to urgent care. The drive may calm her a bit, too. Have DH meet you there. Just bring toys and let them play in the exam room. You'll get through it! Won't be fun but it's only one night:) (Easy for me to say LOL). GL!
  • Thank you everyone for the advice! I remembered that our pedi has a nurse triage line, and after calling they said they wanted her seen within 24 hours of her symptoms onset. All the local urgent cares closed at 7:00 so DH went ahead and took her to the ER tonight since he's working all day tomorrow. I'm hoping they aren't too busy and they won't be there all night.
  • Viral conjunctivitis doesn't have green discharge. Only bacterial. Time to pack up and go to the Dr. Stat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • When I've had pinkeye it's usually pretty painful and uncomfortable so I would go to the ER..the sooner it's over the better for your DC plus then there's less time/chance of it being spread to everyone else in the house.
