Mom car

So I need to decide what kind of car to get. I currently drive a Mini Cooper, which for obvious reasons will not cut it once LO is here. I really love a sport wagon as opposed to an SUV or mini van. Any recommendations? Was thinking VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI. Thoughts?

Re: Mom car

  • My husband is a master mechanic and says while VW are nice, they are very expensive to work on. So unless you are buying a new one, that's something to keep in mind.

  • I have the Volvo wagon and I love it. Repairs are expensive but I honestly have taken it in only a couple times and we have had it for 5 years. It is a 2001.

Not sure if it qualifies as a sport wagon, even though that's what DH calls it, but I love our Subaru Outback. It has a ton of cargo space, which makes it easy to store a stroller and still make a trip to Costco. And looking at the future with 2 car seats doesn't freak me out.

I drive a VW Jetta TDI and I love it!!!! I get awesome gas milage and it has tons of safety features. We bought it with the intent of having our LO in it. We bought ours new and the maintance hasn't been an issue. They also told me when my coverage would stop up front and how much the service would be after that, so we have plenty of time to prepare. Plus, our dealership is awesome!!!
  • I was looking for a sport wagon too instead of an SUV when I did the mom-car switch.  Jetta sportwagon was top on my list until I test drove it.  I really didn't like the way it drove.  I tried the diesel version and the regular version. They seemed sluggish and didn't have a lot of pickup.  The diesel was hard for me to drive - it didn't seem to coast.  Maybe I just don't know how to drive a diesel car, but it was a really herky jerky test drive with that one. I really like the Subaru wagons but the new ones are HUGE.  I the ones from a few years back better. Then on a whim, I test drove a Honda CRV even though it wasn't a wagon, and really liked it.  It's a little smaller than the Subaru wagon and its lower to the ground than most SUVs so I don't need a ladder to get into it.  I loved the way it drove, it had a lot of nice features that came with even the lowest tier model, and it was much cheaper than the Subaru.  I had a hard time choosing between the two, but we ended up going with the Honda.

  • I went from a Subaru impreza to a dodge caravan. I love my Subes but they r just too small for us now. Maybe the SUV would have been good but we couldn't afford to buy new and they were still a lot of money so we got the caravan 4 years used. It has been great! We have had it a little over a year. Once my kids are older I will go back to a normal car but really has been so convenient. I never have to worry about fitting stuff in our car anymore. Plus the two dogs can fit too.

This exactly!  I just test drove the Honda CRV this past week and I loved it, but I am waiting until after LO is born to switch b/c I just can?t give up my car right now.

Some features of the CRV I really liked.

Even the base model has a backup cam now.

Seats are super easy to fold down and lift back up if you need the extra room

Seemed super secure, sturdy and roomy.

I love the Subaru Outback. There is also the Forester, which if I'm not mixing them up is a bit larger.

I travel for work and sometimes I get them as rental cars which means they're practically brand new and I always love driving them!

Married my love 8-25-12 TTC #1 September 2012. BFP 2-2-13. DS born 10-16-13.
TTC #2 in December 2014. BFP 12-31-14. Expecting a September baby!
  • I saw a 4 door mini the other day. Have you looked at those?

  • We went from a VW Passat Wagon to a new 2012 Prius V. Its been awesome! Its got a lot of room! And you can move the second row all the wayforward or backward for more room or do a half split if you need more room on one side. Cant wait to put baby boy in there in September. We also put our 85pound Labradoodle in the back and hes comfy back there! Good luck! I would at least test drive one they look small when you see one on the highway but looks are deceiving!
  • Plus the prius V gets 40/41 mpg and you only need unleaded which is a nice change!

Other way around, the forester is smaller, like CRV or Escape sized. I drive one and love it!
As for wagons, what about the Golf wagon? Not as big as the Jetta or Passat ones. Or how about the Prius V? Or a 4 door Mini?

  • Thanks for the input. I have considered both the Subaru Outback and the Mini Countryman. The Outback doesn't do that great on gas, especially next to the VW TDI. I would love to just trade in the Mini for the Countryman, but there is virtually no cargo space so we probably won't go that direction. I never even considered a Prius, but I will have to look into it now. Thanks again!

  • omg i had a vw golf once which turned into a real true lemon.  i HATE VW.   get a subaru!!!  i loved my forester, and we had an impreza sport wagon too (but it's a bit small).

i now have a honda CRV which is awesome.

I want a Prius V SO BAD! My '02 Jeep Liberty has almost 200k miles on it, and I commute about 50 miles round trip to work every day, so my next car absolutely has to get good mileage, and preferably a hybrid.

  • I am a small-car person who was very picky about switching up to a "mom car," but I test drove a few of the crossover SUVs and ended up falling in love with the Nissan Rogue. It drives very much like a car, very maneuverable, and has a good amount of space inside. The price is great too (much cheaper than their Murano). Low maintenance costs as well.

Now that we're expecting baby #3, I'm starting to look at the *shudder* minivans... ew.
