Infant Self Rescue

https://www.infantswim.com/about-isr/about-isr.html

has anyone heard of this? If not, google videos of this. It is crazy! We don't have any instructors near us but I really want to figure out how to teach our son this. I took him to mom and me swim lessons, but it was nothing like this. I find it fascinating!

  • ISR is really popular in FL. I looked into it when we lived there and it is really expensive, over 1k they estimated. That was for lessons and refresher courses, but they could not guarantee that the child would learn the skill within the lesson period so further lessons may have been required. I opted for mommy and me in the end since we didn't have a pool on our property. I hear the lessons are very difficult to watch as a parent because they teach them by throwing them in and basically letting them have a few moments of sink or swim.

  • DH was all about this when I was pregnant with DS, but I don't think I could stand it. We're not around water often enough to justify putting us all through that.

  • We wanted to do this, but the classes are far from home and cost a bundle.  So we are doing mommy & me classes along with the fact that I'm a good swimmer and can teach her.

A friend of mine does this with her 3 boys and they are very strict.  She has to track when they use the bathroom, what they eat every day, how much sleep they get, and the list goes on.

It is rough to think of doing because like a PP said they just throw them in.

I only ever hear that it's really expensive, so we didn't look into it further. We do have a pool with no fence in the backyard, but I am always there with Alex and feel safe. We also have a life vest for him, but he refuses to wear it so far. It's just one big screamfest when I put it on him and he doesn't calm down, so we keep on trying about once a week and I hope one day he'll just accept it. :-)

Just curious to why this has anything to do with swim lessons?? Did she tell you why this is necessary? I'm truly curious!

I have heard that it is because they want to make sure that the child is in top health prior to being thrown in.  They don't want the child to be sluggish and therefore not as responsive making the lesson unsafe.

  • I saw this on facebook a while back but they don't have any close by. I'm doing the mommy and me classes too. I don't think I could watch them just throw him in the pool, the thought freaks me out. I'm just going to keep doing classes with him at the YMCA and he can learn that way.

  • I have heard about this in the past but an acquiantance on FB just posted today that she has used this program with all 4 kids and it works. I asked her for the details regarding cost and time. She said the lessons are only 10 minutes, 5 days per week. It costs $75 per week and they usually need 5-6 weeks of lessons with refeshers after the fact. Just watching the video with the baby in the water made me cry, I don't think I could watch them throw DD in the pool. We might look into it though for peace of mind. My parents have a fenced in pool that we always make sure is locked when we are over but still...
