Hi Ladies! My baby is 5 months old and I have been feeling really bad lately. I went to my OBGYN and they ran a few tests and determined I have a hyperactive thyroid. Does anyone else have this? How is it treated? Can you educate me on your experience with it? Thanks!!
Re: Postpartum- Hyperthroidism
I've had hyperthyroidism for years before I got pregnant. I have Graves disease. There are a few ways to treat it depending on the severity. Do they think it is related to the pregnancy/post partum? They may just treat with simple medication that you take daily. In my case I had my thyroid essentially "killed off" by radioactive iodine. I now am hypothyroid because my thyroid doesn't function at all and I must take a pill (synthroid) every day for the rest of my life.
Pregnancy and postpartum hormones have done a number on my levels so my dosage has been changing since I got pregnant and my doctor said it could take up to two years to regulate.
It usually is a pretty simple thing to treat but does take monitoring with bloodworm to see if medication/treatment is working. Feel free to let me knowif you have any questions. Thyroid problems run in my family and I've dealt with it a lot.
