If you swaddled your baby....

If you swaddled your baby in the beginning, when did they stop liking it?

Re: If you swaddled your baby....

  • I don't know if LO ever stopped liking it, but she was able to get out of it very easily at 6 months. She'd start out swaddled (and asleep), get her arms out by the MOTN, and sleep the rest of the night on her stomach. That's when we stopped doing it, because I was afraid she'd flip over and wouldn't be able to get her arms out.

    Not much help... sorry.

  • My DD is 8 months old and still likes to be swaddled at night when sleeping. I know we need to ween her from it. She sleeps soooo much better and we're able to put her down so much faster when she's swaddled. When we put her to sleep unswaddled, she tends to wake up once in the MOTN. We play it by ear sometimes. If I've had a long day and am very tired for some good sleep, I'll swaddle her for sure. When I'm home this summer (I'm a teacher), I'll ween her from the swaddle for good.
  • We swaddled until 3 months when she started rolling over.

He started rolling over regularly around 4 months.  We "weaned" from swaddling by first putting just one arm out of the swaddle.  When he got used to that we put both arms out, but still swaddled his legs.  Once he got used to that we transitioned easily to a sleep sack.  We are still using one of those every night.

  • We started doing the one arm in/one arm out at around 3 months, as DS never liked being swaddled.  He was breaking out the swaddle (halo swaddle/sleepsack) by then.  We switched him over to a sleepsack at 4 months.

  • I started doing one arm out at 6 months. It took about 2 weeks before I could do both arms. I used the halo sleep sack with the swaddle so that it would still be tight around his belly. Then one day my mom babysat in the evening and just didn't put him in it and that was that.

He started rolling over at 2.5 months but never rolled in his sleep so I kept him swaddled. He started rolling around 5.5 months in his sleep so that was when we transistioned to one arm. Once he rolled he could get out his arms.

I honestly thought he was going to be swaddled till he was 12! Lol. I just waited until he was ready. I tried earlier than that and it was a disaster. So I figured when he was ready he would be able to do that. He is 8 months old and sleeps as well as he did when he was swaddled.

  • I don't know that he ever stopped liking it.  But he was able to roll over back to belly at 4 months, so we had to stop for safety reasons.
  • We started one arm out at 4 months when he could roll back to belly but not belly to back. It only took a few nights until we could do both arms out but still swaddled his trunk. We used the halo swaddle me sleepsacks. Now he just has a sleepsack but only wears that every third night or so. The other times it is a pajama set from Carter's.

  • Around four months he grew out of his swaddlemes. I got him a woombie and he started stretching and getting frustrated but still couldn't sleep without it so we got the Merlin's sleep suit and it helped him adjust.
  • We switched DS from the swaddle to a Zipadee-Zip suit at 6 months since he was rolling over in his sleep.

  • Around 4 months he kept breaking out of the swaddle and waking himself up. We weaned him at this time. He had never rolled in the swaddle but after we stopped he started rolling over and sleeping on his stomach. He also slept better after the swaddle was gone.

  • DD needed to be swaddled up unitl around 8 months. Once she could roll over we only used a blanket to swaddle her so that she could work herslef free during the night.

At 8 months we noticed she started falling asleep unswaddled so we stopped doing it on a regular basis. Now at a year old 95% of the time we don't swaddle. The other 5% of the time we do swaddle her arms to her body with a blanket. The naps and nights when we need to are generally associated with her being over tired, a delayed bedtime, a big exciting day with new experiences, teething, or us putting her to bed in a new environment (hotel room, friend or family's house etc.)

He started fighting the swaddle at about 5 months. We unswaddled and moved him to the crib at that point (from the RnP).

    this exactly.

  • We stopped between 2 and 3 months just bc it seemed like DD wanted to suck on her fingers, and she obviously couldn't get to them while swaddled. My son was swaddled for more like 5 months, as it was the only thing that chilled him out.

  • we took cues from her.  Right around 5 or so months she started unswaddling herself at night and she was sleeping fine, so we just stopped using a swaddle and went to sleep sacks.  With DD1, we slowly transitioned her around the same time.  First we left one arm out of the swaddle, then both, then we just got rid of it all together.  She liked her legs being swaddled (and not loose like a sleep sack) so we did that for a while.

  • He loved it but started to roll both ways at 12 weeks so I had to stop. However, I did use the arms free sleep sack until about a month ago.

We just stopped about a week ago. DD is just shy of 6 months (will be 6 months on the 10th). She had been having increasingly restless nights and waking multiple times. We didn't know it was the swaddle (we used the miracle blanket and there was no way she was busting out of it), but one night out of desparation we tried putting her in a sleep sack. Her sleep is still not great, but it's better than it was. We haven't looked back.

Weaned DS from the swaddle when he was 3 months.  With DD, it was just over 4 months.

Same for my twins. They just kept breaking out of them. We did start using the sleepsack, and they are still in their sleepsack at night. I'll probably get rid of the sleepsack soon. I live in Texas and even with only a short sleeved onesie under the sleepsack, I feel like its hot! I just don't want them to play with their toes all night :

  • If LO is rolling from back to belly, he shouldn't be swaddled anymore, even if you've never seen him do it while he's sleeping. You never know when he might, and it is dangerous to sleep swaddled on the stomach.

  • We dont swaddle any more since 5.5 month point or so, but he doesnt sleep well with just a sleep sack on. He naps and sleeps in a sleep sack with his hands inside the sleep sack. I have put a small stitch on both the armpits of the sleepsack. So it is "semi-swaddling" in a way. With his hands outside of the sleepsack he tends to flail them a ton, which wakes him up. With his hands inside the sleepsack, his hands are restricted, and he cant use them to take the paci out either.
