High-Risk Pregnancy

Progesterone shot question re: side effects

Anyone who gets the shots having trouble with side effects? I get the shot on Fridays. By Sunday I usually wake up with a head ache and Mondays are typically emotional disasters for me. I have had 7 weeks of shots now so I have been watching this pattern for the last few weeks and can only really attribute it to the progesterone. Obviously it could also be this preticular pregnancy for me which I think from the beginning has been waaay more emotional and hormonal then my last one. But usually I wake up Monday morning and can feel the crying session about to come on. I will remind myself to keep my mouth shut and just get through the day but usually the day ends in me totally over reacting to some minor disagreement with DH and then me in tears bawling my head off to the point I can't stop. Yesterday I totally lost my patience with my 13 month old which then made me feel like a total failure which just made the crying worse. I can barely take it! I can't imagine another 12 weeks of this!....Im just at a loss. I have a Dr. Apt on Friday and I plan to talk to her about this but thought I would ask you gals if anyone else has had this experience. Thanks!

Re: Progesterone shot question re: side effects

  • I was on daily IM progesterone shots for 3 months without any side effects.  Perhaps your dosage is higher than mine was?  A tough pregnancy can be an emotional rollercoaster as well.

  • I was on the shots for 17 weeks or so, I was scheduled to be on them for a full 20, but stopped early due to the side effects.  For the first 9 weeks I had zero issues, then I suddenly began swelling from them, just at the injection site/area.  At first it would subside after a few days, then it turned into weeks.  Didn't really bother me, other than a pain in the arse :)  Then I began full body swelling, I didn't put two and two together that it was a side effect until my right hand went numb and I went to L&D.  They told me swelling is a common side effect (water retention) and that for me, it was compounded by two things 1. I swell naturally when pregnant and 2. It's also a side effect of my bp medication.  So, they said I was swelling so badly that it was putting pressure on the nerves in my neck causing my hand to go numb.  I've been off the shots now for 3 weeks I want to say and I've regained feeling in two fingers, they expect that this will continue until I deliver.  All that being said, I was miserable and bitchy because of the pain :)  Still am...LOL.
  • I've noticed headaches and pain/itching at the injection site but I chalk everything else up to normal pregnancy symptoms. High risk pregnancies are stressful, especially if you have another LO at home. Hang in there!

  • This is my second pregnancy getting them and the headache/sleepiness the day of the shot I noticed I get. The other symptoms sound like pregnancy symptoms to me. Good luck and hopefully these things calm themselves down for you!
