Hello! I usually post on the adoption board since DH and I are in the process of that right now. We should be entering the waiting pool within the next couple of weeks! Although we don't have our child yet, it helps to know we are on the right path. We plan to be honest with our future birthparent about our plans. Even though we told our SW we wanted two kids we will bring up the OAD when the time is right.
By backstory: DH and I dealt with IF for 5+ years. After 4 IUI's, 2.5 IVF's, and 4 C/Ps we have moved onto adoption. We are doing DIA here in Portland. Since trying to start a family has taken it's financial toll on us we have decided to be OAD. We always thought we would have two but one night I brought up being OAD and DH agreed. Knowing that we will follow this path has brought some relief to us Frankly I never thought I would feel this way about having one but it seems to fit.
I feel good about this decision because
1.) Financially it will be best for our future since we spent so much on IF treatments.
2.) I feel being an only child now is different from being an only child decades ago. Kids are more involved with activities outside of the home, communicating is completely different than it was when we were kids, and there are more resources available to only children. My mom was an only child and I know she may be upset with us only having one (she really wanted to have a sibling but never did so she made sure to have at least two kids) but I feel that it is right for us.
3.) Now we can do cool things like host an exchange student or an amateur athlete (such as a minor league hockey player, known as billeting) without feeling constrained in our home.
4.) I feel that it will fit better in our lifestyle.
Whew that feels good to get out. I am glad this board is here.
Re: Intro: Feels good to say we are OAD.
Hello and welcome. Congratulations on moving into the waiting pool! That's so exciting. I hope the process goes super smoothly for you guys.
I never thought about hosting an exchange student later on. That's such a cool idea.
Yay for the waiting pool! I hope the rest of the process goes smooth.
My parents hosted a foreign exchange student when I was 13, it was AMAZING. I would love to do the same when my daughter is a bit older. He was from Sweden and with us for 11 months. 3 years after he left us, my mom and I went to Sweden to visit him and his family for 10 days. I still keep in touch with him (he was 15 when he came over, so we are just a few years apart in age).. he's on my FB and everything. I highly recommend that experience to anyone
I think it would be a really cool experience to host an international student. Plus we want to travel a lot more and traveling with one will be easier in so many different ways.
