WIC and medical

I am a single mom who just had a baby.  I am living in between two places, one is with my bf.  We are not married.  He works but doesn't support us fully.

Can I apply for WIC and MediCal?  Has anyone done this before?  Or will this not qualify because the baby's father (my bf) work?

Re: WIC and medical

  • It depends on how much he works. I get food stamps and work pt and when I got pregnant, I automatically qualified for WIC and Medicaid. At the very least you should qualify for WIC and your baby for medical.

They told me to qualify for WIC (and Medicaid, because the income requirements are similar) the 3 of us cannot make over $36,132 yearly.  I don't work, and he makes over that so we cannot qualify.
  • I'm sorry to hear that you don't qualify. :(

I don't know why they take people you live with's income?  It is not like we are married
  • I wasn't working ft and could hardly make ends meet and still didn't qualify for WIC or any kind of assistance.

They take the income of the family; married or not if he's the father and he's helping support her then his income is counted.

They said that it does not matter.  Even if you live with a relative, they take the relative's income. I didn't know that.
  • Do not tell them he lives with you problem solved

Yeah, how about don't do that. There's other ways to get assistance other than manipulating the system.

OP; check with the laws where you live, but here if a baby is on Medical Assistance they automatically qualify for WIC. It's something to check into if you really need it.

Yeah it's stupid. And the crazy thing is, it doesn't matter who it is. Father or not. It's me and my mama and I'm going to see what they say
  • I live with my father, and they only took my income and my bills.

I suggest going in and just applying and seeing what they say. Someone who works there would give you the most correct advice.

Also WIC is different than state insurance. You will most likely qualify for WIC, the insurance and food stamps is from the state and they have stricter requirements.

    Good Luck

  • I live in Illinois and nrver once has anyone asked me about BD or his income. If you fill out any forms say you ate single, never married if that is the case. Also put your other address down w/o bf. In my case only my income was ever asked for. I qualified based on my income level, not BDs.
In Illinois if you qualify for the medical card you automatically qualify for WIC.
Not sure if this helps at all.

I think it's fine if you really need help. Btw, did you have insurance for pregnancy and delivery? How did you do that?

With my son I did and only because I had to not put the father down - he only made 1600 a month - medicaid said that was too much. I was unable to get anything with my daughter - kept getting denied. This was a while back, but I know the laws have not improved. The majority of people who get assistance at least where I live are drug dealers or they work under the table to work the system. There is a big difference in needing help and using the system.

I am not saying lie if you make enough money, but technically they cannot include other peoples income if you are not married. It is simply a loophole. If he makes enough money to get insurance it is wrong obviously.
