I'm a first time mother to be and trying to decide where to continue my prenatal care and delivery. I really want to work with a midwife and have a water birth. I am hoping for a natural birth without intervention. Given this, I have looked into OHSU, Legacy Emanuel and Alma Midwifery as potential options, but am having a hard time deciding. I had also looked at Andaluz Birth Center but then read some questionable things about it... If any of you have experiences or recommendations, I'm finding the decision making process really difficult. I was leaning towards Alma because it seem so much more comfy than the hospital environment, but my husband is nervous about a non-hospital birth... Thanks!
Re: Legacy Emanuel, OHSU or Alma Midwifery
Your husband is right to feel uncomfortable with an out of hospital birth. Recent research presented before the Oregon legislature showed that planned out of hospital births had a neonatal mortality rate nine times that of births planned to take place in hospitals. This is research gathered from Oregon birth certificates filed with DHS in 2012 and is limited to singleton, full-term pregnancies.
My SIL originally planned to give birth at Legacy Emanuel but her husband had some issues with it...unrelated to the quality of medical care (as I recall, something to do with the cafeteria serving unhealthy food), and I believe she gave birth at Providence Portland, and said it was absolutely wonderful. From what I have heard, OHSU is pretty natural-birth friendly.

My mom managed to have four babies at home without having to deal wiht even the *fear* of going to a hospital. I'm all for home birthing and can't wait!
That said, I am indeed going through Alma. They have received nothing but positive reviews everywhere I have looked, plus my sister in law went to them for both of her pregnancies and had a beautiful experience.
Their birthing center looks great, but I'm doing going the home birth route.
I had my first son at Legacy Good Sam and LOVED it but you can't deliver in the tub. I have had fabulous experiences at Legacy Emanuel but no experiences in L&D. I've heard great things about their mws and the waterbirth option.
If you plan to go to OHSU, try and be seen by Linda Glenn. She delivered my second son, albeit at home, but had an absolutely amazing experience with her.
