Cry it out?

At what age do you start letting the baby cry it out? My daughter is a few days shy of 10 weeks and I've been hearing conflicting advice. During the day she wants to be held constantly. She barely naps. I can not seem to get anything done with out her screaming her head off. My back is aching as well as my head. Some people are telling me I should let her cry it out but I don't know if she's too young. Any advice would be greatly appeciated

Re: Cry it out?

  • Based on the different things I've read, four months is the minimum age I would feel comfortable with CIO and then I probably wouldn't do it unless the situation was desperate. There is so much conflicting information out there to filter through that you just have to figure out what you are comfortable with.

  • CIO is never recommended before 4 months at the bare minimum. Parenthood isn't easy but the newborn phase passes quickly.
  • I started having to let DS cry it out for naps when he was about 5 or 6 months. By that time I could tell he was playing me and popped his head up everytime I put him in the crib awake.

  • I'm with you! This little guy rarely naps and won't keep himself occupied for long so very little gets done around here. Sometimes I have to let him cry for a bit, otherwise I'd never get to pee or inhale some sort of lunch.
  • I don't really have advice on CIO but have you tried wearing her?  My DD naps sooo much better (sleeps for much longer and doesn't wake up as easily) when I wear her - the Moby is nice for long periods of time without hurting my back - and I can actually use my hands and get something done.

  • 4 months is the earliest as developmentally they are not ready to self-soothe before that. I really hope that we don't have to do the CIO method with DD but in case we do I have been preparing myself by reading the book and also reading different views on the topic online.

I found this blog about CIO and have found it interesting, you may like it too:

  • I asked my son's Dr last week. He said absolutely not until 4 months.
