3rd Trimester

How many diapers will I go through per day (on average)?

I know it depends on when they go etc. but what is an estimated amount that most mommies use on average? 5-6? ... more... less?

Also, how much do moms usually spend on diapers per month... from newborn to the next few months?

Just trying to plan ahead... considering this with bills.

  • Ha! More than you can count. Ds went though at least ten a day for the first month of his life.

Yep, somedays are still like this. I swear DS loves nothing more than pooping in a fresh diaper.

It's been awhile, but I was totally going to guess a dozen. I feel like she went non freaking stop in the first few months.

Yep. Every time Ds ate, he pooped. He's 18 months old, and still poops 5 times a day sometimes.

  • If you're looking to save some money, try cloth diapers! Prefolds w/ covers can save you a BUNDLE!!!!! If you have a cloth diaper store in your area, I would stop in & see what they have. The cost is up front, but the total cost of purchasing everything can be a few months worth of disposables.
  • Ohhh I have a question too! Sorry to add on to this post...So we're looking at half the diapers being poop and half being pee approximately? How many diapers fit in a Diaper Genie?! Do you put pee and poop diapers in the Genie or just poop?

Ha, yeah. Ditto the others. Plan for at least 10 to 12 per day for the first month or two.

DD was rash prone and could only wear Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive dipes for about three or four months...lucky for us, those are the most expensive diapers ever. We easily spent 100 bucks a month on diapers in the beginning. It slows down though. From 1y to potty training, we were exclusively using Luvs and only spending about 25 bucks a month.

Depends on the kid.  For the first month, DD seemed to have some level of poop in her diaper at every diaper change and we went through a lot of diapers.  DS pooped once a day and we probably only changed him about 8-10 times in a 24 hours period.

As for the diaper genie, it holds a lot of diapers and since my kids were/are bf'd the poop diapers don't smell, so we put them in the diaper genie.  Once I transitioned DS to formula, his poop diapers went right out to the outdoor garbage can.

  • I'd plan on 10 to 12 per day. In general, the larger the box you can afford the cheaper it is per diaper. A box of 172 is around fifty dollars if you're buying Pampers.
  • We went through 10+ a day. Fortunately, we had enough diapers from the shower that we didn't have to buy much for the first couple months.

  • After we went through a case a week for the first two weeks, we switched to cloth. I second the PP who said to look into it...disposables can cost 2000 to 3000 depending on brand and when potty training starts, and you can CD for 200 to 500 from birth through potty training, and then use them for the next kid or resell them. That's what sold me on cloth!

  • 10 per day or more.  I can't even remember how much we spent.  A lot!

Early on I think all the diapers we changed had poop. Newborns just poop that often, hehe.

Personally we put both kinds of diapers in the Genie. Now that we're using size 4 and he's going through 4-5 a day, I would guess we change it about once a week, give or take. But honestly that's because once the diapers sit in there awhile the smells waft out whenever you push a new one in and it's killer. (Not a problem with bfing poop, but solids are stinky!!)

We don't do cloth but I have friends who do and they swear by it. We are considering doing it this time around since we'll have our own place and I won't have to lug laundry up and down several flights of narrow stairs anymore. :)

That being said, I don't think I'd ever use cloth in the newborn stage!! They just go through too many and I feel like washing a load of diapers almost every day is the last thing I'd want to deal with in a sleep-deprived state, hehe.

For the first year we threw all diapers in the Genie.  After a year or so we started only throwing poop diapers in the genie and pee went in the regular trash.  This time we will probably use the Genie for poop only.

Not if you buy using Amazon Mom and Amazon's Subscribe and Save. Then they're under $40 a box.

  • My diaper service recommends 70 wk so 10 per day and we have found that to be pretty accurate with both boys.

I'm not sure if it would be less with disposable diaps or not.

  • I think it's a minimum of 8 per day. I only bought 1 box of newborn diapers, they outgrow those quickly(usually) if they are in them at all. I bought 2 boxes of size 1s, my daughter was in 2s and 3s the longest, but every baby is different. BRU has been having sales like crazy. Buy a box of 1s and a box of 2s. I typically get them on Amazon unless they are on sale at BRU.

  • I remember using 8-12 per day. It will depend on the baby and FTMs (myself included) tend to use more diapers at first as they get the hang of things. I also highly suggest Amazon Mom subscribe and save.  I get all of my diapers from there and feel that the pricing is excellent.

  • If you are breastfeeding, not too many during week 1, but after that, 8-10 I would guess.  When he/she starts on solid food, it may be fewer.
