GD - super inaccurate readings

WTF - I'm using the FreeStyle Lite meter. I just tested 1 hour after breakfast. My first reading was 171. I thought there was no way, I only had 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast with butter. So I immediately tested again. Here were my following four readings: 143, 155, 150 and 161. Really? I'm so annoyed I just want to cry.

Do I call their customer support line? My insurance? My doctor? I go back in to the dietician this Thursday for my 1 week check up and then the following week to my OB. He is super serious about this and I know he'll be a total stickler. I just want to get it right.

Re: GD - super inaccurate readings

  • I have a different meter than you do, but I have had different readings (within about 3 of each other) if I test right in a row.

I have had HUGELY different (inaccurate) readings if one of the following: something is on my hands (my hands aren't clean) or if I don't get enough blood.

Make sure to wash your hands with warm soapy water. I run a finger under warm water (to get the blood moving) and then dry the finger, prick, get about twice the amount of blood you need for testing and test. I have had the most accurate results doing this.

You may want to check your test strips also. Make sure they aren't past the expiration date.

  • Can you calibrate your meter? I have a little thing of drops I can use to see if its calibrated properly.

  • Like PP, I've had wildly inaccurate readings if I've recently used hand sanitizer, lotion, etc. Wash your hands and try again.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to calibrate your meter or inquire about getting a different one.

  • The first reading of 171 was without washing my hands. So I washed with soap, patted dry and did the follow up readings. I dont think I can calibrate but I'll look into that. I tried calling my insurance but they're closed til Monday of course.

  • I have the same meter as you. It comes with a little bottle of solution. The manual should explain how to do it.

  • Meter readings can be extremely inaccurate.  I believe they are allowed a 10-20% discrepancy in reading accuracy.  Which is ridiculous and frustrating.  It doesn't mean you did anything wrong or your meter is bad.  it's just what they allow.
