Question #47,892 Regarding Solids

Title: Another Q regarding solids

Kate has (finally) begun eating table foods without gagging. As you are well aware, a large majority is landing in her lap/on the floor. So my question is, do you follow up them feeding themselves by feeding them a puree or hand feeding them more table food? Or do you just consider that they are still getting what they need from breastmilk/formula and just figure whatever they manage to ingest is good? She is quickly losing interest in both purees and me feeding her. But she is a skinny minnie, so I'm always worried about her eating enough. Thanks for you input.

Re: Question #47,892 Regarding Solids

  • We've mostly only done table food because he gagged on purees. I would just keep offering the table food until she's bored with it. A lot does still go everywhere here. I will sometimes put a bite in his mouth for him here and there so I know he at least got those bits. He ate like half of my Amy's mac and cheese today, four green beans (soft stick shaped veggies are great because she can hold them and gnaw), and a whole slice of cantaloupe. I was sad to see so much of my lunch go nut happy because it has lots of milk fat and I knew he got enough. Besides, I shouldn't really be eating that!

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I've been thinking the same. I just figured that if he's hungry then he'd eat it. If he's playing with it or pushing away from the tray then I call it done and eat him out. I still nurse him throughout the day so I hope he's getting enough in.
Maybe offer snacks if you're not already doing so?

  • I go between feeding him and letting him feed himself. Because he does miss his mouth a lot. And I also dig around his chair and take out what's fallen and put it back on his tray before I take him out. Also I usually BF before and after his solid meal just to ensure a full belly.

  • I always have a puree ready to go and will offer that if he eats everything and still seems hungry. He mostly just likes to play with purees and try to feed himself with the spoon, which means most of the puree ends up on the floor. He loves table food and feeding himself, so I will also give him some of whatever I'm eating if he still seems hungry.

On the rare occasion that he eats and I don't feel like he's gotten enough, I will BF afterwards to see if he has a full belly or not.
