13 Month Old Daughter Hates/Refuses Sippy

We have tried many different types of sippy cups. She used to chew on the tip a little and try to drink, but only for a sip. Now she completely refuses. She won't even put it in her mouth and just screams if you try to put it near her mouth. I have heard recommendations to completely take the bottle away, but my little girl is very strong willed and I want to make sure she's getting enough milk (especially since she's such a picky eather). Help!

Thank you.

Re: 13 Month Old Daughter Hates/Refuses Sippy

  • DD started doing this, and I ended up taking the little stopper (the thing that controls the flow) out of the cup completely, now DD is drinking from it again. I'm thinking that it was too much work for her to get the milk out, so now that she can just sip it, she's happy. It kind of makes the whole no-spill thing pointless, but she's drinking it, so I can't complain.

  • Have you tried straw cups?  DD loves those, but never really drank out of the spout sippies.

  • My DD was like this until we did a straw sippy, and then she just took off- she was completely weaned from bottles a week later. After a fair amount of trial and error, I found she liked the ThinkBaby brand the best.

  • Mine was like this too. She did the straw ones no problem however. Now at 2 she started chewing the ends so I had to move on. Still won't touch a regular spout sippy. Munchkin makes ones that are more like travel mugs we drink of. She does those no problems as well now. I just don't think she likes the feel of the hard high spout in her mouth.
  • Use something other than a sippy, then.  They're only supposed to be transitional (for a few months) anyway.  A straw cup, a bite-valve water bottle, or even an open cup are all other options.

  • My DD was that way, but we had to get a sippy cup where it wasn't hard to get it out. It's a step 2 or step 3 nuby one that we use.
