we're replacing DS carseat, because it's a PIA to get him in it (britax boulevard). so, we're either going to get the britax roundabout or marathon. the roundabout only goes up to 40 lbs and the marathon goes up to 65 lbs. do we NEED a carseat that goes up to 65 lbs? won't DS be in a booster seat by then? thanks for your input!

My DD outgrew her Roundabout before she was 2.5 and is much too young for a booster. I'm still glad we had the seat because it made airline travel easy those first 2.5 years (since the Roundabout is pretty compact).
My DD is quite tall.
He will likely outgrow the Roundabout for height pretty quickly; it's a very short seat.
2 that were recommended to me by thecarseatlady.com were the Graco Nautilus and the Safeguard Go, which start as 5 pt harnesses and convert to boosters.
The "avg." to outgrow the Roundabouts is 4 years old. The limit is 40 inches and 40 lbs. Most parents prefer to keep their kids in a 5 pt. harness until 65 lbs. these days.
Since I just had another baby anyway, we bought the Graco Nautilus for our older daughter, which is a great seat for the price. Very comparable to a Britax as far as comfort, safety, and ease of use. My son will use our Roundabouts and then eventually upgrade to something else too.
