Success after IF

When did you first leave LO for a vacation?

We have left LO overnight before, but never for more than one night.  DH and I are wanting to take a true vacation (as in get on a plane and fly somewhere) sometime this summer, but I'm nervous that I won't enjoy myself because I will be missing LO.  We will be gone at least 4 nights.  We are thinking about Tahoe.  Any advice?  Have you done this yet?  How did it work out? LO is 9 months old right now and we will be looking to travel in August or September.

Re: When did you first leave LO for a vacation?

  • We do a lot of one night being away and started that when our first was only about 3 months old.  We don't take a ton of week long vacations so I think our first was when our oldest was a little over 3 and at the time we also had a 16 month old.  We always leave them with family so I'm never really worried about their care and sure, I miss them, but at the same time it's nice to get away from it all.  I've never missed them so much that I didn't enjoy the vacation!

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • DS was 21 months.   It was just more hassle than it was worth while I was still BFing, and the opportunity didn't really present itself before then.   He was with my ILs for a few days and then my mom watched him here at our house....we were gone 6 days.  He was fine.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • We did when dd was about 7 months old. We went on a road trip for about a week, so we were pretty busy. It was rough missing her but well needed. Plus she got some quality time with the grandparents.

I think 4 nights is a perfect length. You'll be refreshed and that much better of a parent and person because of it.

Can you skype from your phone or tablet while away to get your fix? Lol, that always helped us.

  • I've still never been away from LO for more than a few hours, so I'm no help.

  • We don't have anyone we could leave her with for more than one night (and we'll be doing our first one night away on 8/30 - the thought pretty much makes me sick).

We take vacations with her instead, and I can honestly say that I don't think we'll ever go away for more than one night without her, and definitely never more than about 2 hours from home.

  • We went to the Bahamas for 6 days when DD was 15 months old. We bought a one week wifi pass at the resort and used the iPad to facetime every morning and evening. It worked out perfectly. We had a wonderful vacation but still felt like we got to "see" DD every day.

Surprise! Baby #4 is due in March!
  • The first time I was away from my daughter was when I gave birth to my son and even then she came to the hospital every day for a visit.

I'll just be honest, I went to Napa Valley with some of my girlfriends for 4 days (only 2 full nights away) and I was totally miserable being away from them.  I mean, I had a good time with my girlfriends obviously but was counting down the days/hours until I could get back home and be with them.

When we planned the getaway I thought that I would be so excited to get away and have a break, but as soon as I was on the plane I was missing them already.  And they were home with my husband the whole time so I didn't have anything to "worry" about, I just really had a hard time.

We actually were planning on going to Boston for our 5 year anniversary this July for 4 days and I told my husband I didn't want to anymore after how much I missed them during my girls weekend.  Now we are just going to spend the evening away in Chicago (very close to home) and they are going to stay at my in-laws for the night.

    But, that's just me!
