Preemies

Baby after a preemie

Hello--

If you had a baby after your preemie, did you go early (not preemie-early, but before your due date)?   DS was born 5w 2d early, not super early, but still considered preemie, and I'm curious if there's a higher chance #2 will come on the early side.  I don't know if I'll have to have the shot some ladies get after an early baby, I haven't had my first appointment yet. Are there any statistics on this?

Thanks!

I'm not a preemie mom, but I do work in a hospital prenatal unit where a lot of our patients wind up with preemies (for various reasons).

It's my understanding that having a previous preterm birth does increase your risk of a subsequent one -- but that being said, it kind of depends on the situation. Some issues are more likely to recur than others, some are easier to prevent, some it's just a crapshoot. I mean, some people go into preterm labor without any real explanation, so it's hard to know how to prevent it next time, other than watching you very closely. Others have a cervical incompetence issue that can be addressed earlier in the next pregnancy to prevent it even becoming a problem. Some need an emergency C-section due to HELLP syndrome or preeclampsia, which they may or may not develop again next time.

So the statistics are only useful in a limited way. Which is why we're sort of stuck saying "having a previous preterm delivery increases your risk of a subsequent preterm delivery," but other than that it's sort of vague.

I would discuss your particular situation with your OB and see if there are any factors he/she thinks are important for YOU. GL!

Thanks!  They don't know why he came early, I have a very easy pregnancy with no issues at all.  My water broke early and I wasn't going into labor, that was the only issue.

  • My son was born at 34 weeks, 3 days.  This pregnancy I received weekly progesterone shots from 16-36 weeks.  My due date is Saturday and this baby is still hanging out trying to give me a true taste of what it's like to be patient and wait like the rest of the world has to.

My first child was born at 24 weeks 3 days - I still have no explanation as to why he was born so early. I just spontaneously went into labor, and by the time my midwives, OB, and hospital paid any attention to me, I was fully dilated and they couldn't do anything to stop his birth. They didn't seem to think anything was wrong, even though I insisted. 6 years later, my husband and I decided we wanted another child so we found a really good high risk OB, made an appointment with him and explained my pregnancy history. He was confident I could have a healthy pregnancy and we decided to try and get pregnant. I'm now holding my 4 week old baby boy - he's perfectly healthy and was born at 39 weeks 2 days. My pregnancy was perfect, no problems at all, and the delivery went very smoothly.

    Good luck to you!!

  • Thanks, ladies!

So, pretty much, the answer is who knows? :)
