Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding, Nursing, Pumping... Thoughts

I keep seeing posts about breastfeeding vs pumping (theres one going in 2nd tri kind of) and I could use some clarification or at least a reason as to why this is said the way it is.

I feel that regardless of the method of which the milk comes out (pumping or nursing-baby on breast) it is called breastfeeding. You are feeding the baby with the milk that comes from your breast. Nursing is baby on breast and pumping well you get the picture.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this?

  • Yes, I agree. When the baby gets breastmilk it is a breastfed baby. Nursing is boob and breastfed is nursing or pumping.

I EP and if people ask if I'm breast feeding I always say yes.

Ugh yes! A friend of mine said I never breastfed my son because I EPed for 9 months, pumping every 3 hours around the clock. I couldve TPed her! I dont know why it bothers me when people done recognize that nursing and EPing are both a form of breastfeeding.

  • I nursed both kids at home, and pumped for bottles at daycare.  I never considered kids who take bottles only to be any different than kids who nurse.  Both are breastfed.  Maybe the terms are used for clarification on the board you are looking at??

  • With the caveat that I was not an EPer, so maybe I don't have the background to answer this question, I consider the differentiation to be the food source, not the means of feeding.

So a child that is exclusively on breastmilk- from a breast or a bottle is "exclusively breastfed."

A child that is given both breastmilk and formula is "breastfed."

A  child that is exclusively on formula is "formula fed."

  • This seems like semantics. They are different experiences, though, and there are advantages and disadvantages to exclusively pumping and exclusively or non-exclusively breastfeeding directly.

It depends if you're talking about what the baby eats (breast milk vs. formula vs. both) or how the baby eats (breast vs. bottle vs. both).

IMO, if you breast and formula feed I'd say just that. The baby got both bm and formula. In regards to only having baby on breast and or bottle fed breast milk the lo is still an exclusive breast feeder. To me if you asked if my son was breast fed if say yes even though I had to exclusively pump for 9 months.
  • It depends why someone is asking, though. If someone is asking "what did you feed your baby", then yes, you fed him breast milk for 9 months. If someone is asking for advice on latching, making it through a growth spurt, how to know if a breastfed baby is eating enough at the breast... well, you really didn't experience that.

I don't really find that it comes up anywhere except the Bump...

I experienced it with my first and for 3 weeks with my son. He got very sick and could barley latch on to anything. After 3 weeks of back and forth and one hospital stay I did everything I could to get him back to my breast. So yes I have experience. Not saying any of that in a snappy way for the record.

You are right on it doesn't come up anywhere but the bump. I did have a debate with a friend on it not long ago and wanted opinions from others.

Eta if you can't see my siggy I have a 3yo dd and a 2yo ds and twins on the way
