Preemies

New to the group - 34 week preemie

Hi everyone! My third child was born prematurely at 34 weeks gestation. Grayson weighed 4 lbs. 14 oz at birth and only had to stay in the NICU for five days :). No respiratory problems. Anyway, he is 10 weeks old now (4 weeks adjusted) and doing wonderfully. I'm interested in learning what an average weight for a preemie at two months is. At nine weeks he weighed 10 lbs. 1 oz. and his doctor was thrilled! He was in the 10th percentile for weight and 25th for height.  I've heard it's a good thing that he is even on the charts at this point. Would like to hear your stories and experiences :)

Re: New to the group - 34 week preemie

  • Congratulations on the birth of your son. My second DD was born at 34w 5d and had a 14 days NICU stay. Looking back over her baby book it seems that at 2 months old she was weighted in at 10lbs. For the first two months she was also on the preemie formula, which is way she put on the weight. Our pedi took her off after two months. Now at 14 months she is doing very well, over 23lbs. Talking a little bit and finally has a half a tooth (still working on it).

  • That is wonderful and reassuring to hear! My son is on Neosure and the doctor wants him on it until 6 months so I hope that will help with the weight gain :)
  • Well, it is really going to depend on adjusted age at 2 months.  DS was 34w6days and 6.7lbs at birth, so he was ahead right off the bat.  He came home at 5.13lbs and was 11.11lbs at 2 months (5 weeks adjusted).  Pretty sure he was in the 50th to 75th percentile for everything.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

my son was a 34 weeker too.  He had a 10 day NICU stay and was 5lbs 8oz so he was a bigger preemie.  By 4 months my Pedi told me he had basically caught up.  He was 10lbs at his two month check up and the growth was insane from there.  By 9 months he was 25lbs.  Ever since his 4 month check up he has been in the 90-95% for weight and head and 75% for height.  I never considered him a preemie just because he has been right in line with normal development.  Glad to hear your son is doing so well!

  • Congratulations! Due to my complications, I am having a 34 weeker on MOnday by c section.  I love the name Grayson, but the way.  That was our choice if we had a boy; we are having a girl.  What is his middle name?

  • Congrats on your baby! My boys were born at 34w0d at 4.lbs 10 oz each. They were in the NICU for 20 and 27 days. I believe they were about 8.5lbs at their 2 month appt, not even on the charts. It sounds like your LO is doing great!

  • Ok....now I think my LO is tiny. She  was 34w0d and weighed 4lb1oz at birth. At 9 weeks we were up to 7lb 5 oz which the pediatrician seemed pretty happy with. We go for our 4 month apt on June 20 and I know she has grown a lot but I don't know what she weighs. Does anyone know how big your LOs were at 4 mths?
  • My son was born at 34w 5d and at 2 months, he was 9lbs 15oz, 20.5" (the length might be wrong, he measured the same at 1 and 2 months, so one measurement was off).  He did not have to stay in NICU at all (we were incredibly lucky).

ETA: He was 6lbs 1oz and 18 3/4" at birth.

  • That's REALLY good. My DD was 5 lb 3 oz at birth and at 9 weeks was 9 lb 10 oz (I just looked at her calendar).
