I have noticed that some of you said you have given your LO Cheerios. I would like to give my little dude some because I think he would really love playing with them on his tray and picking them up/eating them, but DH is very leery. I give C toast halves to chomp on/play with while I make his mashed breakfast. Not very much toast makes it inside his belly but even that makes DH nervous. I have tried to explain to him that a lot of learning things will be a little stressful for us, but he seems to think it is just too soon to give C something hard like Cheerios.
So, I guess I'm just wondering who has and hasn't had their LO explore those types of food? Do they have teeth yet? When did/will you decide to 'take the plunge' past purely mush foods? Obviously, the parents who practice BLW aren't really faced with this (I originally pushed for BLW but DH was not having it, haha!).
Re: Cheerios
Thanks for the input, ladies. Yeah, I was thinking the Cheerio route for its affordability and it'll be easier to keep on hand. And to clarify, I stay at home with C, so I (although I still have nerves and reservations about things) am able to witness his maturity much more than DH. If he does happen to get a little nibble of toast in his mouth, he just chews and chews like a pro. I just don't want to hold him back because of our fears.
ETA: Re-reading my last sentence made me think I am over thinking this, haha. Maybe DH and I will just have to munch on some Cheerios tonight to make a more informed decision
DS has 7 (4 on top and 3 on the bottom) we gave him puffs for about 2 weeks since they dissolve really fast. We tried the cheerios a few days ago and he seems to enjoy them more. They are pretty small and do dissolve fast so I felt okay giving them to him. He seems to suck on them and then swallow them, he does a little mashing with his tongue and teeth but I think for the most part they are just melting.
We haven't done cheerios or puffs, but for the past week we have been doing finger foods (about the size of my ring finger) at dinner time. It took several days for him to get better coordination, and now he prefers self-feeding (which is GREAT b/c I hate spoon-feeding him while trying to eat at the same time).
We aren't truly BLW but the size of the foods we're giving DS is the same. He did gag A LOT at the first few days, but he's much better now. We've done broccoli spears, sweet potato wedges, bagel spread w/soft cheese, strawberries, banana, peach slices, spinach, pasta, soba noodles, chicken thigh. I've given him strips of lamb last night but he can't gnaw it off, so after he sucked it for a while, I took it out of his mouth and cut it into small pieces and fed it to him.
