Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Table food

So, I'm trying to figure out how to get my LO to eat non-pureed food, and, for the life of me, it's not working.  I've been putting small chunks of banana or puffs out on his tray so he can play with them and pick them up and put them in his mouth, but he doesn't seem to want to put them in his mouth - my husband and I joke that we should put his food on the ground since he likes to pick everything up from there to put in his mouth (i.e. dog hair).

The other day I had a small piece of banana and he held his mouth open so I put it on his tongue he mashed it around in there a bit then gagged until he threw up... I'm not trying to rush it or anything, I'm just wondering how others have gotten their LOs to eat table food instead of purees? I haven't tried putting just the table food out when he's hungry before I feed him anything else... maybe that will help? I'm just not sure how to introduce table food so he'll actually eat it.

This is my 3rd baby and I've never done baby food- just did straight table food.  The earliest we did it was @ 8 1/2 months old.  Although my babies could sit unsupported by 5 months old, I just kinda waited until they started munching with their mouths and honestly taking the food.  When they are this age, we just had them sit in our laps so they understood meal times and to include them.  When they are @8-9 months old they would try to grab the food (my 6 month old really tries to grab the plate now but I won't allow her to have food yet).  It started with stealing of cheerios at breakfast, peas at dinner, etc.  When they were a bit older (like 9 months old, we'd put them in a seat and give a few things cut up).  My DD was eating shredded steak at 9 months old.  It may just be a bit too early for him.

  • Read the book Baby Led Weaning. It is a wonderful resource. I'm not sure how old your LO is but for the first year breast milk or formula is where they should be getting 90 of their nutrients so don't try table food if LO is really hungry.

We started just putting large chunks of food, banana, apple, toast, steak, chicken, green beans, carrots, etc on his high chair tray. Whatever we are eating he gets offered. Some days he actually puts it in his mouth, other days he just plays.

    Good luck!

  • I do a mixture of BLW and pureed foods (puree for daycare and with grandparents).  My LO is 7.5months and has been grabbing at things for the past month.  He loves to imitate.  (He won't even use the sippy cup - he actually will only drink water out of his own little cup!)  So I put pieces of bananas, steamed broccoli, avocado, etc cut into pieces that he can grab (like a french-fry shape) and he just puts it in his mouth on his own.  It's usually a big huge mess and he probably only takes in 1/10th of what is in front of him, but he enjoys it.  Just make sure everything is soft enough.
