Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Please tell me your worst teething experiences

DS will be a year old at the end of the month and only has his two bottom teeth. The past three days he has been miserable. He needs to be constantly distracted to maintain a state of semi happy. Even then he's iffy. We are assuming it's teething related because he is drooling like crazy...back to wearing a bib all day...he has so much excess saliva that he gurgles it when you lay him down, he gets way worse in the evening, etc. He's been crying kind of in his sleep off and on multiple times a night since Friday night and he had been sleeping straight through. We are all exhausted! We use Advil, we tried orajel...although it takes almost a full on wrestling match to have him let us near his mouth to get it on his gums...we have cold teethers, vibrating teethers, the works. He is still miserable and DH and I are running on empty. How long can we expect this to last and what else can we do to help? We've tried the ice cube in the mesh feeder, the washcloth in the freezer...he wants nothing to do with them. As DH put it tonight, it's like DS is throwing one big continuous temper tantrum with us and we can't stop it! Help!!

Oh and I don't see or feel ANY teeth to know where it's even bothering him!

I know this sounds crazy, but have you tried an amber necklace? We have one wrapped around DS's ankle (not comfortable putting it on his neck), and it really seems to help. I was really skeptical until a friend described how her daughter's chronic kidney pain was helped with it.

It might just be a placebo effect, but it does seem like DS has a rougher night when he doesn't have it on.

  • Skip the orajel, it doesn't help and can numb their throats and make it hard to swallow (unless it's the homeopathic version, which doesn't numb, but IMO, doesn't do any good either).

When you are giving a dose of advil/motrin, squeeze a little out of the dropper onto your finger and gently rub it directly into his gums where you think the teeth are bothering him (when you're able to figure it out).  Then give the rest of the dose like normal.

Putting the ibuprofen directly on the gums acts as an anti-inflammatory and gives more direct relief. It's the only thing that has worked for DD (and she already has 12 teeth, including her first 4 molars).

  • After you've rubbed his gums with Orajel or Advil and given it a bit of time to work, rub his gums with the back of a cold spoon.  You can also do this with your finger.  Mash his gums enough to help the teeth break through layers.  He may cry while you do it, but will be relieved after.  It's not going to make them fully pop through, but it can give him some relief.

Orajel also makes single-use swabs.  I find those are easier to use, especially with a squirmy child.  If you pinch his nose, he'll open his mouth.  Since they're more "exact" in application, you end up using less.  I rarely use more than half of a swab on an application.

Have you tried frozen bananas?  Split them into their natural sections - there are three long ones.  Or, you can cut them in half lengthwise.  I do sections as they aren't as slick as slices.  Then, lay them flat on a tray/plate and freeze them solid.  You can give him those to gnaw on.   Since they have flavor, I found that they're more likely to actually get used and not just tossed.  I also do frozen green beans this way.  Frozen french fries also work.  Basically you want anything that is edible frozen but gets soft when it's defrosted.  Now that DS is older, I give him a cold carrot to chew on when his teething is bad.  He's teething the 2 year molars, which are awful, and very little has helped with those.   Another thing that worked well for us when he was working on other teeth was cold apple slices.  There's just enough resistance to get a crunch and he loves apples.  However, by that point, he had enough teeth to chew them up.

  • Worst teething experience we had was her two top teeth, which came in within a couple days of each other.  Five days of constant whining/crying/waking up in the night, a runny nose which led to a cold on top of the teething, complete with high fever.  It was miserable!

When we go through this, we keep her dosed with motrin and tylenol. When it's really bad you alternate those two every three hours and it's fine.  I also just discovered that frozen french fries work wonders!  She likes the taste, it's chilly so that helps, and it's long enough that she can get it back to molars that are bothering her.  I just make sure to watch so she doesn't choke herself with it, but she's been pretty good! Cold pacifiers are great, you can even get nubby ones. Frozen wet washcloths...I think that's it for what we use.  GL!

Hylands teething tablets are everywhere .. diaper bag, my purse bedroom, front room..  when they can't fix it we use a half dose of advil.  we have 12 now.. top and bottom front 4 and 4 molars.
With the back ones we found this awesome teething binky at TrUs which is a yellow rubber double prong designed to reach the back .. we bought about 6 of those, it's awesome and I bought extra to send to my stepdaughter in Australia in her new baby parcel.

It sounds like you are doing all that I've tried! DS has 12 teeth and is getting his canines. Last week, we went on vacation and he was extremely crabby one night and the following day. He would not go to sleep until super late, and he woke up extremely early. At first, we just thought it was because we were in a new place and there was an hour time change. But then, I felt inside his mouth, and one of his canines had poked through. The next day he did just fine and was happy. This morning, he woke up at 4:00 am and then I got him to fall back asleep, and he was up again at 5:30. He would only sleep after that if I held him and rocked him. I'm one tired momma this morning....

I hope some teeth poke through for you guys soon! The only time that I was able to notice swollen gums was with his molars. Otherwise, it was a total guessing game as to why he was crabby before his other teeth came through!

  • LO is working on the molars now and yesterday morning he just layed on the floor curled up and crying. I felt so badly! He had his wellness appointment today and the pedi told DH to skip the oragel because the odds of getting it on the gum that is actually hurting is very slim.
