BTDT: Did I get the right thing?

MH and I were at Target so I did a little "after baby" shopping for me.  I bought some ultrathin overnight pads and Target's brand of "medicated wipes" with aloe and witch hazel.  Is that right?

Also, what do I do with the pads?  Freeze them and lay them on the pad?  Dab/wipe and then put the pad on?  Just put the wipe on the pad?

FWIW, I think I'm going to make a sticky for "after baby mama care."

Re: BTDT: Did I get the right thing?

  • The wipes weren't what I was shown at the hospital last time. It was Tucks pads. This time I bought Target's up&up brand witch hazel "medicated hemorrhoidal pads"

I put 3 or 4 witch hazel pads on top of the overnight pad...basically just covering from back to front. It helped with the swelling and discomfort.

ETA: The wipes might work, but I don't know what they're like. Maybe someone else can chime in.

  • Sounds like a good start to me. If you didn't get the long pads, you may need to lay 2 front to back to get the best coverage. I would also recommend getting some underwear that you don't really mind ruining, just in case.

As far as the Tucks pads go, you don't have to freeze them. If you're using an ice pack, you can lay them right on top of the ice pack. That way you'll still have direct contact with the witch hazel and the cold of the pad will seep through. One if the nurses I work with suggests taking the Tucks pads and tucking them in around the area that had the laceration or episiotomy and leaving it there, rather than lining the pad directly with the Tucks.

ETA: I think the wipes should be okay, and you can just line the pad with them like you would with the Tucks pads. But I've never seen the wipes before, so I'm not sure.

I saw the packages of those on the shelf when I bought mine. I've not seen the actual wipe, so I don't know if a wipe vs pad would make difference. I'd worry the wipes were a little thinner.

I checked out the "Undie Sundae" link and it looked pretty good, but I will add that the Epifoam should be used sparingly. It is a steroid foam and comes with side effects and a maximum recommended dosage. You should only use a very thin line down the center of the pad, not the large dollops as shown, and it can only be used 4 times a day, so not with every pad change. Make sure you save one of those doses for the last time before bed!

  • I did the same thing today and just for witch hazel pads at Walmart. I hope those will work. I'm so over shopping and returning stuff. Ugh.

I never used that kind of stuff last time. Does it really make a difference?

It's really more for comfort. If all you need is a pad, that's fine.

  • To add to your list... my favorite after care product by far was the little squirt bottle the hospital game me. I don't remember what it was called, but basically every time I used the bathroom I would fill it with luke warm water to clean my stitches and lady parts. It was so soothing I almost didn't want to give it up even after I was healed lol. They'll probably give you one at the hospital.

I think it's called a peri bottle right? I know my hospital gives them out too.

Yep, it's a peri bottle. I had a csection and still used it, makes you feel so much cleaner.

Oh definitely! That thing is great if you end up getting a few stitches down there. It's such a production using the bathroom pp. I liked putting my tucks container in the fridge so it was cold when I applied it to the pad.
